So my parents are back in the US since my bro is still in the hospital. Before they retired in 2009 and started to live part of the year in India they had their cars here. Dad sold his car off, mom gave (sold / transferred) her car to her brother under the agreement that when she is back in the US she gets to use it.

I need to get insurance for that car now. She wont drive my car, she wants her old car to drive as that is what she is comfortable driving. The car is currently under my uncles name and he has insured it. He said that she could drive it as its under his insurance, however i'd feel better if she has her own coverage (just liability - car is not worth more than 3K anycase, its leaking oil at the moment but running).

Any suggestions on how to do this. They will only need it for the time they are here. The car is still under my uncles name. Its probably easiest to add her to his policy and then just pay him the amount, but barring that is there any other possibility. I cant add her to my policy since my car is with AAA and I do not own the other car.

Suggestions?

Cliffs:

Parents in country - need liability insurance for car.
Car owned currently by mom's brother, its my mom's old car
Car is insured under my uncle, need insurance for my mom to drive the car.

Insurance has to be under Uncle's name - he owns the car.

If your Mom wants the responsibility of insurance; the Uncle needs to transfer title to her; she goes and registers it and provided proof of insurance.

Other option would be for your Uncle to add your mother to his policy and she can cover what ever costs she desires.

Eaglekeeper, I think thats what has to be done. My parents will be here until my brother gets better, which seems like he will be released from the hospital in the next few days, but his recovery will take at least 6 months. I'll just ask my uncle to add his sister to the policy and then all will be good. I'll pay the excess.

With the word retired in the story and an older vehicle - figure maybe $20-40 for the 6 months additional coverage

under most policies she would already be covered for liability coverage while she drives the car.

under most policies she would already be covered for liability coverage while she drives the car.

Most policies would exclude relatives who live with the owner (i.e. if OPs mom is living with OP's uncle).

Some policies will exclude people who drive the car "too" often.
