Generate XML in Ruby on Rails

I need to dynamically generate an xml file that can be requested by client-side javascript. For some reason, simply using the standard controller action with the template turned off is not working: I can browse to /controller/action to view the xml file, but the client-side javascript does not like what it receives when I tell it to load the xml file from that address.

Any ideas out there?
