Generally I'm a supporter of photo radar

Today I was driving down one street and took an offramp onto a high speed highway (80km/hr).

As you are merging, you have to be checking over your left shoulder to make sure you're not gonna hit anyone.

Anyway, there is a construction project going on a little further down the road and the speed limit decreases to 60km/h.

Well as soon as you get onto the highway, there is an unmarked police car with photo radar about 50 feet past the sign that says the limit has changed. I slowed down to maybe 70km/h after I saw the sign. I could have slowed to 60 if I slammed on my breaks, but that would have caused the guy behind me to rear-end me.

I didn't see a flash, but it's bright and sunny, so I have no idea if I got a ticket.

Now the reason I'm upset is that there is always a sign that says the speed limit will be changing, and I didn't see that sign.

I did a loop back around to figure out where the hell the sign was. They stuck it right where you begin to merge, and I imagine almost nobody sees it because they're all doing a shoulder check to make sure they're not going to nail someone in the other lane.

I'm going to be so pissed off if I get a ticket in the mail because of this.

Umm, photo radar IS just a cash grab, without exception. That was the whole point.

then why are you bitching? you were speeding. if you didnt see the sign that is your fault.

The sign was placed in such a way that people won't see the sign saying that the speed limit is changing. The first sign people merging from the offramp will be seeing is the sign saying the speed limit has already changed and then will either get a ticket for speeding, or cause an accident.

he's bitching because the sign placement is poor. should have been earlier in his mind. I have no opinion because it's impossible to really judge w/o actually being at that intersection.

as for camera's being a cash grab, not always. We have some cameras up in a "35mph" zone that realistically should be 40-45, but ppl are doing 55+ all the time. They made the cameras blatant to get people to slow the hell down, and make it easy to punish those that didn't. The particular area was the closest part of the stretch near neighborhoods, so it makes sense. Just lowering the speed limit there really wouldn't do anything, hence the cameras have been far more effective.
