I am somewhat considering a similar network setup. Although I'm not that technical, I can get around. But my questions really lie within the hardware involved.

I have a DLINK DI-624 and a Netgear MR-814 (Super G and Standard B, respectively). The DLINK is currently connected to the cable modem and has one computer directly connected and several wirelessly. I want to know several things:

1) what are these terms: acces point and bridge?
2) can i connect the netgear to the dlink via ethernet cable to have the netgear transmit wirelessly in another residence? (assume i have long enough cable)
3) can i connect the netgreat to the dlink via wireless to do the same as above?
4) is there hardware that simply allows for a wireless transmission (where i can connect to a switch port)?

thanks a bunch if you guys answer these questions!

Thanks Jack! The 4th answer is exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to see if I could find a good deal on this, any ideas? Should I keep these the same brand? I'll probably connect it wired into a switch port on the DLINK and let is broadcast for the backrooms.

Also, I think you touched on this question in another thread I was just reading about cat5 versus cat6. You also mentioned cat5e and shielded versus unsheilded. Any articles, or can you just give me a quick definition of each? THANKS

CAT5e can handle 100Mb/sec. and Giga bit/sec. traffic. that are currently in regular use.

However CAT5e is Not shielded, so this is the "End of the Line" for it (i.e. the current Giga traffic).

CAT6 is shielded and thus will be compatible with future ?Speed? enhancements.

As a result many new installations are already installing CAT6, to be ready for the future.
Self installer should be aware that CAT6 Being shielded makes it harder to terminate.

1) What is the purpose of having a "shielded" network cable?

2) What does terminating mean?

- sorry for the ignorance
