as I see it when i move from 2x 512 to 2x 1gig it i stick with ddr400 then the cas lat. stays the same but for overclocking I will have to use the divider as I do now. But you can also go with ddr500 or something of that nature and have cas 3 instead of 2 or 2.5 and run at native frequency. The other timings seem to but a bit slower than the ddr400 counterparts as well. As for price, the higher frequency ram is also more expensive. So... which way to upgrade?

the ram will be going into a rig with the opteron 146 on a msi neo2 plt. bord if that makes any difference. I will eventually change my motherbord to one that supports pci-e but for now i have a radeon x850xt that overclocks nicely but im sure ill swithch bords and vid card withing hte next 4 months.

If you're hardcore and want everything in performance to click your way, lower CAS will make your system more responsive, but I'd say DDR2 will be better if you're working with heavier loads that require high memory bandwidth.

Try this:
AMD Athlon X2 4400
Asus Deluxe board
2GB of 2-2-2-5
SATA-Raptor or SCSI hard drive
PCI-e Radeon X1K

ultra high responsiveness

anandtech said it themselves, that a move to DDR2 with an AMD platform, for mainstream users or even enthusiasts who wantz faster computing, is generally a waste of money and performance gains aren't that great, but the move to DDR2 is fashionable for someone building a new computer right now and wants an AMD chip with the latest DDR system memory technology available.

The rule of thumb for ram upgrade is to alway go with the fastest speed ram at the highest density your system will support. Next to that is to get the lowest latency you can afford. If the choice is DDR500, 1GB stick with latency of 2.5 or DDR400, 1 GB stick with latency of 2.0, then go with the former rather than the latter. Even if the latency of the former is 3.0, by the rule of thumb you are still to choose the former.
