General Question about RAID

I was wondering a couple of things about RAID that I'm hopefully somebody can help me with. If I use a RAID card, how do I set it up with the Bios so that it uses the IDE channels on that card as my primary boot drive. Secondly, I've read that the RAID cards are the preferred method of setting up a RAID system, instead of the onboard variety, but I've just always been under the impression that onboard stuff is just always faster-- am I just mistaken.

When I installed my RAID card, the BIOS immediately new to boot from it. I really can't help you with your second question. I bought a card but my motherboard didn't come with integrated RAID. What MB do you have?

Both on board and PCI based based solutions are tied to the PCI bus, so performance should be close to identical either way.

Well I dont' have a RAID motherboard yet, I am going to get one, or rather I am considering getting one, or getting a mobo with a RAID card. I'm just shopping around.
