I just got my new system and want to upgrade firmware on my LG DVD writer (sig). Reading the enclosed readme file I see the following:

Critical Instructions: (to be followed carefully)

1. Connect the drive as by itself, on the secondary IDE controller
with no other device on the same IDE cable, making note to set the jumper
on the back of the drive to the master position
.

I have only this drive on an IDE controller. It is set in BIOS as master on the primary IDE controller. I have not checked the jumper, as I think it is not relevant since the drive shows as Master. My HD is on a SATA controller.

My understanding is that whatever I do, there is no way to have this drive on a secondary IDE controller, as I have only one drive on one IDE controller. For that matter, I even doubt I could get this drive to be shown as Slave

Am I right to think that these are old instructions, dating to the time when there was always a HD on the primary controller?

So having the DVD-RW drive registered on the primary IDE controller should not have any effect on the firmware upgrade operation...right?

It is my first time upgrading firmware and I want to be certain I don't mess up.

Please tell me if I am right or wrong in my assumptions.
