Couple of questions.

Right now, I have some apps that require me to have open ports. The way that I have gone about opening these ports for my apps was going to "Forwarding" and putting the ports in, and my internal ip in. I haven't customized it for the specific app. Is this the right way to do it? Or is there a way to set it up, so when app "X" calls for the port to be open, it will open it only when app "X" calls for it to be open?

Should I be playing with Upnp or port triggering? Right now I have 8 ports listed, checked as "enable" under my "forwarding" page. I am thinking that these will be constantly open now, even if the app that uses them isn't running.

I think you can use triggering to do something similar to what you are thinking. I haven't messed with that one, but I think what it would do is when your program calls for a port or a range, the router would open them up. If I understand correctly, this would just open the port when it was called for, and would allow any computer to access it, as opposed to forwarding where you would just give that port to a specific PC.

Google should be able to tell you more than you would ever want to know about it, but that's the little bit that I think I understand.
