Hey, and another one. ;) You're welcome, glad it worked. I was without mine for about 2 months and I know it can be really missed.

Yikes! I tried to download updates tonight, and it's back to saying it can't connect to the server. Please tell me they haven't changed the IP addresses again. Anyone else having this problem again? :frown:

I updated yesterday Ok and I just now updated again with no problem (1:15AM CST). That can only mean a (hopefully temporary) regional problem. Maybe try changing your zip code to another one close by.

You may or may not be aware, Gemstar has a long history of having servers down. I've been using an ATI AIW for at least 8 years and there's been many times where I couldn't update the TV guide due to some kind of a server problem. :disgust:

Guess I've been lucky up till now, then, cause this last time with the address change was the first time I had a problem with it (other than the record function, which I've never gotten to work properly, but that's a whole 'nother story!).

Thanks again for all your help.

I had to sign up, something rare for me since I was up till 2am last night banging my head on the desk trying to figure out why this didn't work! I wonder if there was some registry update to keep people working but those of us updating were left dead in the water! Thank god for forums like this since the answers are almost always found amongst the user community! Computer kudos to you! Thank you for saving me $100 I was about to buy another TV tuner software! Who knows I may still have to at some point but thanks to the good work found here I can put that off a while at least!!

That's exactly why I always post all the details at every forum to which I belong. I'm always searching for solutions to problems myself, and more often than not I end up at some forum where some jerk didn't follow-up the thread! The thread will end with something like "I'll try and that and let you know" or "I know how to fix that, I have the info somewhere....I'll post it later", etc. etc., and there's been no follow-ups nor additions to the threads for months or even years! So I'm really glad this is helping so many. ;)

Ok this may be a bit off topic but not so much... I was so thankful to have found the solution to getting my Guide Plus listings again but I had problems scheduling recordings? I determined that I should just start fresh and uninstall and reinstall all my ATI stuff. Using the driver site I determined for my ATI All In Wonder 9000pro I should download Catalyst 6.11 and ATI Multimedia Software 9.14. So after all of that, things were working well but there was no link to the listings... nor the scheduler. I could set shows in the gemstar guide to record but they would not. Now I don't know what is supposed to be running to make things record but my quick launch was up at one point, and another I had the guide running but may have been minimized. Still neither of my scheduled shows recorded. Now its important to note that in Gemstar Guides schedule tab my future recordings showed but in the ATI MM settings the scheduler was empty and the link to the guide was greyed out. I tried updating the Gemstar, and running a repair on the install of ATI MM... Did not seem to help... Although I will add... that with the guide up and running and a program on the current channel scheduled to record DID start recording!? Maybe I need to know what to do to insure scheduled recordings actually start??
So even though it seemed to have worked it had not worked before so I was going to uninstall and reinstall another version as suggested on the ATI site.
I had looked on ATI support site and find just whats going on and the fix the scheduler link... they said to update to ATI MM 9.15 or greater. So I download 9.16 and it installed fine. But as the TV was going thru the autotune I had walked away and came back to a dialog requesting a password?? I couldn't do anything but try to cancel... So now after that the TV does not initilize!!!! So Im in the process of reinstalling again!!! Any thoughts or suggestions would be very helpful thanks.

Update - 9.16 installed and working ok. Passing of a scheduled recording to the TV controls setup worked in the first case, in the second I had to close and restart to see the next scheduled recording. Does not seem to be starting the recording however. I set a recording, verified it was on both scheduled lists (in Guide and in the TV control). I rebooted. It was only 1-2 min before the time of the program scheduled to record when the system started up. The TV app started ontime and was tuned to the channel I had set to record, but the recording did not start!? Perhaps the tv control was just restoring to the state it was in at the time of rebooting. I am going to try one more time. This time I will close the app and leave the tv on a channel other than what is scheduled to record. I would hope the recordings should start as long as the quick launch bar is running? Do I need the TV on? Do I need the Guide open? What do others do? What version do others have?

I've never used it for any kind of recording so I can't answer any of that. I don't know if the TV (MMC) or Gemstar guide has to be open. I'm not sure what the Quick Launch toolbar has to do with any of this. That's just a folder with shortcuts for quick access to any app you want.

I would guess in order to record, certain XP Services have to be running, but I don't know if you're using XP or not, that's all I'm familiar with (never used Vista or 2000). First you have to find out which Services must be running to do this. Look at your Services and just enable and put on Automatic any with "ATI" or "Gemstar" or "Guide Plus" in its name and see if that helps.

Then you can disable one at a time to find out which are actually needed. (You don't want any extra unnecessary Services running that just sucks up resources and memory). I have the "Ati HotKey Poller" and "ATI Smart" Services disabled on mine because they have nothing to do with the PC running and working normally. But I think they should be on by default, and they might be necessary for recording. Make sure those and any others are on Auto that have something to do with what I mentioned above.

Then you may also need the Task Scheduler Service enabled and on Auto for this to work. Any questions about Services go to www.blackviper.com it explains all of them.

You may also want to try looking at the Event Viewer. There's a shortcut to it under "Administrative Tools" or you can put eventvwr.msc at the Run command box to open it.

I don't know if you're familiar with it or not, so if you've never seen it before, don't be alarmed by all the hundreds, maybe thousands of "Error" and "Warning" entries, that's normal. Double-click the "Application" area, then look at all the entries with the same time as the recording started or should have started (you also double-click the entires to open them up). Looking at the details of all of those might tell you something about a program or Service that couldn't be started or caused an errror....if you're lucky. Usually the info you find there is ridiculously unhelpful with cryptic if any detailed information. But it's worth a try.

Great Info,
Works 100%, even exported the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Gemstar\ETV\URL" to Gemstar-New-URLs.reg for future use.

Thanks for your knowledge!

Joined to say thanks Clint!, I had the exact same issue that I thought was tied to replacing a defective Hard Drive or possibly a Windows SP3 upgrade. I didn't realize it was a TVguide/Gemstar issue until finding this forum. My Gemstar Guide Plus+ version was 1.0.0.32. that came with my ATI card software disc. I tried your registry URL update and both the software patch via the wizard to 1.0.0.37 and the weekly guide download worked without issue.

Kudos to you and your efforts. It's individuals like you that keep dogging issues that makes the internet such a vast source of information. Thanks again.

You're welcome, and thanks. ;) I'd hate to think how many thousands are having this problem and don't think to search the net for a fix.

Forgive me if you addressed this in an earlier post (cause I don't have time to go back and reread them all), but when you found out what the problem was with the URL being wrong, did you contact them to let them know? You would think that they and/or ATI/AMD would post the information on their websites. There are probably a lot of people (such as myself) who went to those websites hoping to find something. Thank goodness for Google, or I would never have found this site.

Yeah I told them. I can't remember exactly what he said now, but I remember that he said they could update fine on their end with the old URL's.

I believe I did mention below that they no longer have any kind of a website. Macrovision apparently bought Gemstar and TV Guide provides support. When you do a search for Gemstar, the Macrovision website shows up. There's nothing at their site about 'Gemstar' but when you search for it at their site, you see links about the acquisition. http://www.macrovision.com/jsp...sp?q=Gemstar&Submit=Go

There's nothing at all at the TV Guide website about Gemstar! So I don't know how people are supposed to know to contact TV Guide for support. Not that it would help because it certainly didn't help me.

Interesting. I tried the other route, going to ATI's website, and discovered they had been acquired by AMD. Somewhere on their site, I think I found some general support info (maybe an FAQ or something) about the card itself and drivers, so I sent them an email asking about the Gemstar software. I was surprised to get a response back within a day or so, but they basically said the software was no longer supported. I think I'll contact them again and inform them of this situation, maybe they'll put something in their FAQ.

Yeah AMD got them a few years ago. I doubt they'll care. They have some old KB articles at their site on Gemstar similar to this problem and they said things like change the zip code. Of course none of them worked.

Computer, it worked! - I found this thread by running a tracert on www dot gemstarguide dot com and a google on the IP - thanks for the info - and I agree Macrovision could easily have spread the wealth around here. Then again, I think they started in the "copy protection" business of VHS tapes...

Don't know how you got this info but I suspected the URL was the problem as well. AMD - ATI has no clue, and I never received a response when submitting a request from Gemstar.

For anyone else looking for this thread, some keywords here:
Macrovision, ATI Guide+ ATI GuidePlus+ Gemstar Radeon TV listings
