Gelid fans

Hi,

Anybody use Gelid Silent series fans? I would like to install two 120mm 1000RPM ones on the intake side of my Fractal Design Define R3. Since they are only 1000RPM I figure they should be really quiet, but I'm concerned about bearing quality. There was one time when I bought some cheap fans from an unknown company ant they went bad in a few weeks (bearing started hissing and ticking). They were too cheap to even bother RMAing, so I just tossed them out. Are Gelids also like that or are they actually good?

Good but overpriced. I mean yeah they are quiet but it's not hard to be quiet when you move less air. Try moving more air and see how quiet you are. If you want them as intake fans and have intake filters, look for fans with greater static pressure to combat the effect of the filters.

Right now I have a pair of 1150RPM GTs in there, but installing them was a hassle, because: (a) the Define uses plastic clips to hold the fans and GT frame is a milimeter or so smaller than other 120mm fans, so they just don't stay in place and (b) the fan blades protrude ever so slightly outside the frame and touch the air filter mesh and create a noise. Good thing I had some silicone mounting pins, but now there are openings on the sides and I'm not sure whether the fans actually draw air into the case or just whirl it around. Also there's a strange whistle-like resonance that is quite annoying when everything is quiet. It goes away if I press on the side of the fan frame very hard. I have no idea what causes it and whether replacing the GTs will solve it. Other fans that show this phenomenon are Noctua NF-P12s. I tried Lian-Li fans that came with my PC-A05FN and they do not cause this whistling noise (but for some strange reason one fan was 1100RPM, while the other was 1500RPM and therefore too loud). Be Quiet SilentWings PURE also don't make the resonant noise (but at almost 1400RPM they are too loud). Strange.

I got a few gelid wings in my rig and I agree, they are totally overpriced and NOT silent at all. You can either snag noctuas for a buck or two more, or a lot less for corsair air series, both of which I would recommend over the gelid. But I must admit, the leds on the gelid are amazing--best I've seen on any case fan imo.
