Geil Ultra PC3500 cas2 Vs Corsair XMS PC4000 cas 3

looking at memory modules to suit a A64 3000 and a asus K8Vse Deluxe

now im not sure wether ill be able to afford 1GB of memory straight away so i planned on doing this

buy 512, then top it up to 1gb later

first i spotted Geil's ultra series......and for about £100 i can get 512mb (2x256) PC3500 with CAS2
the 1GB set of this ram is £205, now i have jus thought....they are 2x256 sticks, so im only gonnna have 1 Dimm slot left. i though no worries i could jus get a 512 stick of the same memory but it seems geil dont sell single sticks of PC3500 512MB......nor do they sell single 256 sticks either so i would upgrade only to 768 and have a spare 256 stick to sell

then i saw this....at te place im gonna shop at, they are doin a "corsair memory summer special" on select items

one of these items is Corsair XMS PC4000 but with CAS3 for £100 i can get a single 512 stick so later i can jus buy another one the same and all is done

but is it better to have slower mem with better cas latency or faster mem with slower cas latency which is bst?

and also i am not sure what the A64 has interms of bus.....does it have a traditional fsb or not? does the A64 gain any from using faster memory or does it jus put it in a ratio of 5:4 or 3:4 or something?

of course then i can also get 3200 ram from both companies and this is cheaper and both are cas2

jus this system i am building needs to last a while and now is the only chance im gonna get to build

You won't be gaining anything by using PC4000 over PC3200 unless you're overclocking. Also, the effect of timings is greatly diminished on A64 due to the on-die memory controller. If you're not overclocking, just get some regular PC3200 at CL3 or CL2.5--I'd much rather have a gig of that than 512MB of performance stuff in this case.

It's also worth mentioning that using 3 DIMMs with that Socket 754 proc will decrease the speed of your memory to something like DDR266/PC2100 or DDR333/PC2700 (I forget which one), so for best performance you should probably use 2 modules maximum.

Yes...........just remember.........only outside of "gaming" and "overclocking"!!!!

I have some Geil Golden Dragon PC3500 (512 = 256x2) and it's just flippin' wonderful! It's puuuuuurty too!!! However, I realize that I could (for my uses) probably do just as well with some Geil value PC3200. I just happened to get a deal on the stuff so couldn't resist!

I also have great luck with Kingston Value Ram too. It ain't fancy, I've had ZERO failures in dozens of sticks!!

outside of overclocking and gaming?

i do intend this as a rig for games mainly UT and the future of HL2 and D3, but certainly i cant be hassled with overclocking i jus like stuff to run reliably, run fast and me never having to worry bout it

i have looked at golden dragon stuff too and i like what i see....they got a wierd package.....straight from waffer to PCB thats pretty neat!
