i think i'd get the ti4200.

For sheer frame rate it will triumph, but IIRC the 9550 has some features that the gf4 series lack, but not really enough horsepower to take advantage of them...

i've seen a ti4200 running hl2, farcry and d3 and it seems pretty reasonable and very playable in all of them ;)

The Ti4200 would likely stomp a 9550 pretty bad. The 9550 is DX9 ready, but it lacks the power to take advantage of them.

Yes, both cards are 128bit, and the 9550 has 256megs (should have said that earlier).
I've played hl2 with the 4200 and I thought it looked pretty good.
Looks like I'll keep the 4200 and put the 9550 I just bought in her computer.
Thanks again!

My friend has a GF4 TI4200 64Mb and he says after a driver update he is getting 70-170fps playing hl2dm. How in the world is this possible? He has a 2.88 P4 and 1 gig of ram(doesn't know what speed). Is that strange?

maybe he is running on low settings? i get a constant 70 fps on 1280*1024 with my geforce4mx, so if hes running dx7 mode it wouldnt be much strain on his video card

he has dx9 and 1024x768 but I know he has his textures and all settings on medium. I tried this though with my 6600GT and I got the same fps with low and high settings.
What does the rest of your system look like? I have a p4 2.66 and the 6600GT and my fps can range from 20 to 190..

he would be running low settings and DX8 or 7....it would be possible to get those kind of fps on that setting

the TI4200 would beat the 9550 in most games except DX9 where it may lose but not by much

Hey might have DX9 software installed but the gam doesn't run in DX9 on his ti4200, simply because that card even render DX9 effects. So on that card the game is running in DX8 or even DX7 mode.

OOOO could he have dx9 installed and still be running dx8 b/c that's what his card supports?

EDIT: didn't refresh ok that makes sense

ya thats whats happening...he has DX9 installed but the games running in DX8 or DX7 mode...tell him to change the ingame settings to DX9 and he'll be struggling to reach 10fps with his GF4

If the 9550 is like the 9500 pro or 9600 xt then it should stomp all over a ti4200 in most every game on the market.

I know my 9600 XT was easily two to three times faster in most modern games than my friends ti4400.

Or go over to his house and play canals, just jump around in the water, there is a very noticeable difference in the rendering of water between directx 9 and 8/7

for any of you familiar with hl2 he said he just noticed that it says dx8 in the hardware box and dx 9 in teh software. I'm glad you guys knew what was going on lol cuz I was going to be pissed that his g4 was performing better than my brand new 6600GT lol. Thanks for the info.

I don't know why all you are saying the gf4200 will beat a 9550, I don't think it would. A gf4600 will brobably beat it, but not a 4200. Anyway, a 9550 is basically an underclocked 9600pro, so if it's a 128-bit card and you OC it to 9600 speeds, it will likely stomp the 4200 in all games. As for dx9, I don't have the card so I can't say for sure, but it would likely be able to run dx9-enabled games, as long as you don't use AA and keep the settings at medium levels.

However, if you already have a gf4200, I'd save up more money for a 6600gt, or even a 9800pro, you can get those for like $130 nowadays. Both will give you a big improvement over the 4200.

the 9550 is NOT like a 9500Pro....its 4 Pipelines...got slower memory and is 128bit...its even slower than a 9600Pro..the 9500Pro was very close to 9700Pro speeds

The Ti4200 kills the 9550. 9550's DX9 and AA/AF advantage is moot as it does not have the raw power to run them.

isn't 9550 a competitior to fx 5200 and a better

and isn't geforce 4 ti better than fx 5700

so geforce 4 ti shd be better than 9550
