my friend has a p3 500mhz, 128mb pc100, ati rage 128 pro or something video card. he gets crap framerates (like 25 fps) in counter-strike, the only game he really plays. i told him to get a new video card and recommended a gf4 mx because his budget is limited. is he going to see a big improvement?

Buy a used GF3, it'll offer much better framerates. Be careful about the signal quality, though.

I would go with what`s the cheapest between the GF3 and GF4 MX,with a P3- 500 Mhz cpu it won`t make a lot of difference.

why not just save the money for a better upgrade in the future? Niether card is gonna give u that much more performance as the CPU is bottlenecking the system

things didn't work out. he still gets like 30fps max at 800x600 with the geforce4 mx. could a p3-500 really be limiting him that much?

this is counterstrike we are talking about here, a geforce2mx would even do the trick for him.

Lol, i had 60-70 fps with my p3 667, CUSL2 and 256mb CL3 ram, and a GG2 GTS... I could also run HL on my ancient AMD k6 266 system! Its primitive ass counter strike.

You could stick a Radeon 9800 Pro in there and it still wouldn't do squat. My backup rig has more oomph than that guy's primary gaming box. Tell him to get out of five years ago and upgrade.

I hope he has vsync disabled and maxfps set to his monitor refresh rate, rather than the default 30 (~maxfps 100).

A $40 GF4MX? Are you sure it has 128-bit DDR RAM, or is it one of those SDR or lower-clocked DDR SE's? Either way, he should be pulling more than 30fps, though his CPU is a big limiting factor.

I had an Athlon600 (192mb ram, 16mb tnt2m64), that used to play CS/DOD/etc fine. Then last summer when I got my new system the old one stood unused for half a year. Then a couple of months ago I tried to get it up and running for my sister. To my surprise it only gets around the 20-30 fps now. I think CS/DOD/etc is more demanding now, than a couple of years ago.

Save his money and stop upgrading that old rig.

My advice is to go to some of the cs sites, and try to tweak cs to get it to run (less details).

didnt they add 512x512 OBJECT (not world. world's still blurry as f*k) textures in like 1.1 as opposed to 256x256? I still ran the CS fine on my old rig 6 months ago, on a tournament, 1024x768.
