Geforce4 MX 440 woes! ***UPDATED***

I recently purchased a PNY Geforce4 mx440 (a POS, I know, I know) to replace my, so I thought, aging Radeon 64DDR VIVO card. Well, I slapped this puppy and installed the drivers from the supplied disk and proceded to run 3dmark2001. I ran at the default using D3D HT&L in pure HW mode and in regular mode. I got, at the most, 2800 marks. On my radeon I would get 2749 at most. WTF! I thought this card should be at least twice as fast! I installed the latest and even the not so latest DET drivers and got the same thing! I ran powerstrip and it says the engine speed is 145mhz and the memory is 202mhz. When I try to overclock even at a rather small increment, like 206mhz, the card is about half as slow! WTF?!?!?! So I am thinking that maybe my processor is now the limitation of my system. It is a slot 1 P3 1000mhz. I have 512meg of ECC ram (ECC turned off) cas3. Is it possible the I have reached the limit of my system which is why the GF4 card is not performing well? In Medal of Honor with all vid options turned to the max and set at 1024x768x32 I get a lot of slowdown and it runs about the same as my Radeon 64DDR vivo. I brought both of the cards to work where I use a P4 1.7gig system. I will run the same diags (3dmark2001) with bothe cards just to see if I need a new system at home. If it runs the same I will be sending this card back and will get a Geforce3 Ti 200 which beats the crap out the GF4 MX 440.

I don't understand, if you know the G4 MX is a POS, why does it surprise you that it doesn't go faster than a Radeon 64 Meg DDR?

I believe the MX you have only uses SDRAM and it's really a glorified GeForce 2MX which won't perform close to that of a GF3 Ti 200. I would definitely return the card if I were you... GF4 MXs were obsolete before they hit the shelves.

Hopefully you'll get your situation worked out, good luck,

CK

hmm well... you should of gone with the gf3 Ti200 to begin with, the gf4 MX440 is equal to about a gf2 Pro (or there abouts) that your radeon should of mached up to nicely. Return the card and get the Ti200 you will be much happier with the results.

Well, I was on vacation in florida and saw this at the circuit city there and though they mispriced it. I thought it was a standard gf4, I didnt catch the MX part until I was on my way home. It wasnt until I cam back that I realized it is a POS. And it does use ddr ram. apparently 128bit ddr ram or so it says. If it doesnt work great on the p4 system at work I will return it for either a gf3 ti200 or a radeon 8500. I feel so stupid making this compulsive purchase. I will never forgive myself. :)

The Radeon has 4 Pixel Pipelines while the GF4 MX has only 2 and 3DMark 2K1 is a very demanding benchmark, that's no suprise to me. Sorry for ya man!

EDIT: Just fyi, the 440 does use 128-Bit DDR memory,

There is something very wrong here. Your "engine" speed should be 275, stock, not 145.
(BTW:202 @DDR=404) Sounds like a GF2MX.

look

Edit: (From video forum)

Mine score about 4661(325/485) on T'birddie 1G + 384MB ram. Im using 27.20 on WinXP. Pabster got 5559
with his P4 2G in his review for the MX440. May be he use the first edition instead of SE.

Sounds like you have FSAA on 4x in Nvidia display properties panel,my score for my GF2 Ti is normally around
4725 in 3DMark2001SE with FSAA off but if I have 4x FSAA on it goes in the 1500 range.

Return that sucker. I have a feeling there's gonna be lots more threads like this in the coming months by uninformed users that get tricked into buying these re-badged GeForce2's but expecting GeForce4 performance.

you bet....

Very nice and consumer friendly naming policy from nvidia btw ...

(I dont know how often it happens that an increase in release number/version actually is a back step :)

Waiting for the Riva 128 PCI coming out as "Geforce 7" <-

OK. I installed both my old radeon and the new gf4mx440 in my p4 1.7 gig at work here ar the results including the result from home:

3dmark2001 results:
Home (P3 slot one 1ghz, 512 meg ram):
Radeon=2700
GF4 MX440=2800

Work (P4 1.7ghz 256meg ram)
Radeon=3206
GF4 MX440=4305

It appears that the P3 was the limitation BUT I still think 4305 is still too slow. Granted, the PC at work is a compaq P4 that actually uses standard sdram and not rambus or at least ddr. This sucker is going back. Circuit city doesnt have any decent cards in stock right not but I will try and get store credit for when they get a gf2 ti200 or a radeon 8500. Thanks for the help guys.

John,
Don't be such a hard @ss! The guy was merely asking for some help in determining whether his pc was the limiting factor in the poor showing of the card. His first post was asking for opinions on whether the card should be better than his Radeon 64MB. I don't see the problem with the follow up post. In fact, I'm glad he did post it, so that others can see the results he has been experiencing. Don't scare people into not posting, when they have a perfectly good reason to do so...

P.S. You know what they say... If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all...

bocamojo, he could have easily replied to the original thread instead of making a new one. Let me go "scare" a few more people....

Do you ever follow your own advice? If so, then it isn't very evident.

Lets not fight guys. Thanks for the defense bocamojo. I just ignore anal remarks from anal people. Anyway, I cant beleive nvidia is pulling this crap. Slapping a gf4 name on a barely gf2 card. Caveat Emptor I guess. Oh well, back to my trusty Radeon.

Radeon doesn't have 4 pixel pipelines. It has 2 just like the geforce4 mx but 3 texture pipelines.

The performance should be about same as your radeon.

I paid 150 plus tax. Which is why I thought it was a steal! I had no previous info about the MX series. Now I know better! I called circuit city and they said they would refund, no problem.

John:

You still don't get it. Bocamojo is correct. You're not a moderator. If you want that job, just PM the staff
and maybe they can fix you up. Everytime someone calls you on it, you get your feelings hurt and turn on
them. (Like you did me, when I caught YOU reposting!)

"We told you to get rid of the card in this thread too. Are you going to ask for more opinions in a few days?"

You could be the new mean mod!

John, Advice isn't something you follow, it's something you give to others, and they're supposed to follow :) BOO!

The sad thing is that the average Joe won't know about the difference between the MX and the Ti version of the Geforce4. They may think that the Geforce4 MX is supposedly faster than the Geforce3 and shells out more bucks over purchasing a Ti200. Nvidia knows how to "woo" people, don't they?

Well, I took that POS back last night. Unfortunately, Circuit City doesnt carry any decent video cards. I will save my cash and wait for the REAL GF4 to come out and will probably buy a GF3 Ti500.
