How much of a performance increase will I see going to a GF3 Ti 450 Gold Sample (64mb) from a GF4 MX440 (128mb) when playing games like Splinter Cell and Unreal? Would it be worth it to try to sell the mx440 and get the Ti? Will the GF3 be "outdated" for upcoming games? Thanks in advance

I'd buy a DX9 compatible card if I were in your position. The GF3 will run any current game well, but later games will run much better on Geforce FX's and Radeon 9500's and over.

I don't know what kind of performance increase you'd get from upping to a GF3 Ti 450, but I think you should stay with the GF4 MX until you can afford a DX9 card.

a geforce3 would be a fairly mild upgrade, and a downgrade memory wise. i say wait until you are willing to spend more money and get something that will actually be definate step up.

GF3 to GF4 MX might be downgrade. GF4MX = Overclocked GF2. =(

He meant the other way around.

And, if that is the best you can get right now, just wait, you should be looking at at least the ti4200. Splinter cell performance is terrible an the mx series, I know, that was the reason I upgraded to a ti4400, but upgrading to a ti450 just doesn't sound right.

what about the FX series? The 5200 w/ 128 DDR specifically? The reason the MX sucks for Splinter Cell is the lack of Direct-X support right?

Splinter Cell is a Direct-X 8 game. The GeForce4MX supports Direct-X 7. The GeForce3 & 4 support Direct-X8 and the FX series supports Direct-X9. Although the GF4mx should work (slowly) it wont be able to present the DX8 effects. A Geforce4 Ti is probably your best bet, a 4200 is priced around $100. It will support everything in Splinter Cell and should run it fairly smothly at 800x600

The 5200 w/ 128mb will work, but it wont be a whole lot faster than your gf4mx.
