Geforce3 now delayed for the stepping 5 (prob. bugs)!

3D-Chip GeForce 3: Mixed results, possible of bug On evening of the first CeBIT ceBIT-Messetages Nvidia partner Elsa distributed the first supply of test samples of the Highend Spielebeschleunigers Gladiac 920 with the new 3D-Chip GeForce 3. Thus for the first time power measurements are possible, which are portable according to predicate of Nvidia to the final sales versions of the chip. In the laboratory of c't measurements executed on a 1,2-GHz-Athlon-System resulted in a mixed picture. With QÁ the GeForce 3 could issue itself around 10 per cent (1024 × 768, 32 bits, max. dissolution of texture) and around 25 per cent (1280 × 1024, 32 bits, max. dissolution of texture) from a GeForce 2 Ultra also equal fast clocked memory. At most the GeForce 3 convinced however by a clear projection/lead of 65 per cent with a dissolution of 1024 × 768 with activated 2x-Antialiasing. The test board passed through the Demo001 with 82 Bildern/s.

The projection/lead of 30 per cent with Evolva bumped shows that DotProduct3-Bump-Mapping is effectively accelerated by the Vertex Shader of the GeForce 3 even with DirectX-7-Spielen. Also ACD DRAWINGS with smoothed lines are faster processed approximately 60 per cent, as was it shown in the c't test with the MCAD40-Szene von Indy3D. Likewise impressing cutting off is with the test VillageMark, in which the GeForce 3 can out-play its ability to calculate the three-way overlaid textures in a pass. Thus the new chip 55 per cent obtains better results as the GeForce 2 Ultra. Also the bandwidth-saving memory use with strongly nested scenes might affect itself here. Thus GeForce-3-Grafikkarten should be well prepared for future plays with complex scenarios. The play test Serious SAM occupies however that the GeForce is superior to 3 not in every case its predecessor. Both in the default and in the extreme adjustment its values were around whole 70 per cent under those of the Ultra chip. For the GeForce 3 the responsible persons of sections of the OpenGL driver obviously do not get along with the peculiarities of Serious SAM, while the Ultra board behaves with the same driver very passably. This problem can be naturally solve with revised drivers. Another effect is against it probably more serious nature? because the behavior with the higher Antialiasing adjustments is extreme disappointing.

As large progress praised special Quincunx procedures still was in the quality under the 2x-Antialiasing; the result with the 4x-Antialiasing was beyond that to with the 2x-Einstellung identical. The problems occurred both with the driver version 11,00 and with a Nachtest with the version 11.01. Since the Antialiasing is a hardware feature, it acknowledges this assumptions that the to time available chip revisions contain still of bug and it requires still another further Steppings. Thus also would the constant delays be avowed? Elsa calls in the meantime May as the earliest date for the official introduction of the diagram card Gladiac 920. If it concerns itself actually over hardware bug, prospective customers would not have to pay attention to it to buy no GeForce-3-Karte with an early chip revision (A03 and A04) those sometimes the higher Antialiasing methods controlled. Since these revisions in substantial numbers of items were produced, it is not to be excluded that they arrive also into the trade. Details to test results with the current Steppings of the GeForce to 3 brings c't in output 8/2001 (starting from 9 April in the trade). (Manfred Bertuch) / (jk/c't)

"Highend Spielebeschleunigers Gladiac 920"

Hope Elsa has second thoughts on that name, that's a tough one to pronounce...
