I'm interested in get a laptop for college and am looking at the Dell Inspiron 8000, but I"m worried that it won't hang very well with computer games with the graphics card. I like playing games (i.e. CounterStrike, etc.) and want to know if it's going to be okay. If anybody knows anything about them or has any comments, please let me know. Thanks.

The 8000 is nice, but very heavy. ~8lbs. It'll run counterstrike well, but don't expect it to run as fast as a geforce2 on a desktop. The 8000 well set u back around $2000. If u do buy it, avoid buying the ram and hd upgrades. Dell overcharge on those. its cheaper to do it yourself. I got a inspiron 4000, and its great. ~ 5lbs. runs counter strike well, but not other fps. The price is awesome. Got mine for about $1300. If u really want to play games, u should invest in a 4000 series and use the money saved on a desktop. The geforce2 go is rougly equivalent to a gefroce2mx.

Im kinda in the same boat as you. Im off to college and looking for a laptop. The i8k is what i want right now, but im going to wait it out and see what comes of the new technologies (tualatin, athlon 4, geforce2 go, radeon mobility). I hope dell will carry a athlon 4/geforce2 go combo, which seems to be the best right now. if not, im sure dell will be bring out a tualatin laptop soon. Im waiting until augest. I suggest you wait, prices will definately fall, and just maybe dell will go with amd. I know for sure Acer will be making a Tualatin/Radeon laptop. I want a Dell though, Love those UXGA 15" screens 😀

Even though Dell ran that survey about AMD vs. Intel processors, I read from here and other sources that Dell doesn't want to support AMD in fear of upsetting Intel. Even though AMD has 20-25% of the CPU market, Intel still holds the rest and supporting a rival company might cause Intel to retalliate against Dell by raising their bulk CPU prices. I'd love to see an Athlon 4/GF2Go solution by Dell, but it'll never happen. Besides, that Inspiron 8000 is kinda bulky and heavy, if you're gonna get something that bulky and never take it anywhere, you're better off with a decked out desktop at $2000.

I agree with grimreaper19, buy a laptop for your portability needs and a desktop for your gaming needs. I bought an IBM ThinkPad T20 today (hint, check the Hot Deals forum, it's a godsend 😉, this thing retails for $2500-$3000 at most sites), from what I've read, it's light, powerful (don't expect to run the latest games with it though), and has excellent battery time. I'm going to use what I saved to buy an Xbox, that's pretty much a computer anyway.

Great, the biggest name in the PC business is afraid of Intel when all the smaller companies have already gone at least partially AMD. But I do see your reasoning. Still, I don't think it would hurt them that much.
