First a quick run down of the problem, and then I will give you my system specs:
I turn on my computer this morning and it is in 800*600 mode with 4 bit color depth. I find out that I cannot change it out of this mode. I look in device manager and it says device cannot start, code 10. So I uninstall the drivers, reboot, and install the newest WHQL drivers form nvidia. Same problem. I repeat with the latest beta drivers, no luck. I have tried 4 different versions of the drivers, and nothing has worked. Interestingly enough when I had no drivers installed at all, (or when I boot into safe mode) I have way more video options and 32 bit color depth. I finally gave up and took out the geforce 2 and put in the matrox g400 that is in my other computer, and it boots up and works first time no problem.
I have a 1.4 ghz athlon with a EPOX 8k7a+ board, with a msi geforce 2 pro. I am running windows XP (and have been for months) and have had no problems with it before. I cannot remember installing anything yesterday except for winrar, and really doubt that is the problem. I have not changed any hardware in the computer in over a month. Also before today my computer always shut down and turned off when asked to, now it will not do it unless it is in safe mode. (Though once I swapped video cards it would shut down just fine).
Any ideas on what to do? This is so frustrating to me.
