GeForce2 MX + Detonator 3 = problems.

Hey.I have a Daytona 32MB AGP Geforce2 MX card, and it works absolutely perfect using 5.xx drivers. However, when I turned to 6.18, 6.26, 6.27, and 6.31, problems showed up.

Whenever I run any Direct3D, OpenGL, MPEG movie, AVI movie, overlay color video control settings in detonator drivers, the computer hangs, and only a cold reboot would bring it back to its senses.

I tried the following with no succes:

1 - Forced AGP 1X mode
2 - Disabled all video shadowing in bios
3 - Tried All available beta or WHQL 6.xx drivers except 6.34
4 - toggled AGP aperture from 64 to 128 to 256, then lowered it to 32, 16, and even 4.
5 - upgraded to DX7a , even when knowing it only patches direct input.
6 - Flashed bios to 7/26/2000 bios
7 - When I saw that both the SBLIve and the GF2 MX used IRQ 11, I changed the sblive slot, and even removed it, and its still the same.
8 - Disabled fastwrites.

However, when I lowered AGP aperture to 4 MB, I could go into the overlay color control with no problems, but everything else is the same and hangs the PC.

2D is great and there aren't any cursor problems with the 6.xx drivers, but 3D is something it just won't do with these drivers.

Can anyone help? every 5.xx driver I've used works absolutely great, but I need the performance push that is in the 6.xx drivers.

Computer specs up ahead.
--------------------------------------------------------------
EPoX EP-61BxA-M Intel 440 BX chipset
Intel PII 400@496 (yes I got it back to 400, didn't make a difference with the hangs)
128 MB PC100 memory
SBLive! Value
Daytona Geforce2 MX 32 MB AGP
OptiQuest Q51 15' Monitor

Please help.

When you changed the SBLive slot did you remove it in device manager first,I`ve a SBlive & Geforce2 MX on a Via board(MSI K7T PRO) working great with Detonator 3 (6.31)drivers,I would definetly try & get the IRQ of SBLIVE not sharing with Geforce2 MX,some people have had no problems sharing why others have, so you have to try & rule this out first, so try again.

Thanks for the reply, Mem.

Yes you're correct, when I changed the slot I didn't remove the driver from windows.

However, when I changed the slot of the sblive, it used the same irq (it showed that on the device listing before the 'Starting Windows 98.." message).

Do you think that I should remove the drivers, even if I remove the whole card? If you look at my post, I said that I removed the card and the problem was still there. Was I supposed to remove the drivers too?

Thanks again.

its still the same..still hangs.

SBLive is now using IRQ 9,
GeForce2 MX now using IRQ 11.

PCI IRQ steering is also using IRQ 11, but I figure its not a real device which just needs getting assigned an IRQ.

this is a weird thing..how come it works great with 5.xx and hangs with 6.xx ? I'm sick of this thing.

Please help :(

Infra, there have been reported problems w/the official 6.31 drivers under UT -- could be related to drivers problems interfacing Direct3D API. Fortunately, someone released an unofficial 6.34 driver.

roc919, thanks for the reply.

I just tried the 6.34 drivers.Just the same as any 6.xx driver, complete hang.

Perhaps I should try using the GF2 MX on my other PC and see if it has the same problem with these new drivers, but even so I won't benefit from this because I want to use the MX on this PC.. :*

Yes I would remove drivers as well are you also using Liveware3 or 2 or just soundcard drivers.Btw Wizards & Warriors(the RPG game) runs great in D3D on with my system so I don`t think it`s the 6.31 drivers that are the problem,I even tried some old D3D games they run great as well. It`s possible you might have a hardware or software conflict on your system with the drivers,I would remove SBlive drivers & card & reinstall it,make sure you are using latest soundcard drivers.I have also just gone from 5.22 drivers to the new official 6.31 drivers with no problems.I`m sure the problem is simple(in theory) at least you can get it stable with old drivers.

The old drivers are 100% stable on my rig, but I want to use the newer drivers :(

I believe that the soundcard is not causing the problem, and there is something else causing this.

anyone got any thoughts on this?

I'm just sticking with my older 5.32 drivers in fear that the newer drivers will give me all kinds of errors again. I had just Win98SE, and upon installation of the newer 6.32 drivers, got all kinds of errors on shutdown. Drove me crazy!!! Now, I put a fresh install of WinME on, and refuse to put those newer drivers back in till they get everything worked out. I get a good 80FPS in Q3A at 1024x768x16!!

The MX is now using an IRQ of its own, not sharing it with any real device, just the 'PCI IRQ Steering' Thingy. It seems that the IRQ is not the source of the problem.

I am using the 5.32 drivers for now, until I figure out whats causing the hangs. But I need the performance boost in the 6.xx drivers, because I'm on a PII 400@496 and I need every bit of performance I can get.

Infra,it`s possible you might have a old Detonator system file on the system causing the problem when you install the new Detonator drivers, the only way to find out is a format & clean install which does seem drastic,I would just leave it for now & wait for new drivers or the urge to format & reinstall everything.

Mem, I don't think its an old driver issue. You see, when I first installed the MX card, I installed the 6.18 drivers. And after I tried everything to make it work, I reverted back to 5.32.So its not possible that old drivers affected the performance because there were no old drivers.. just the 6.18.

I will wait for new drivers, though. Thanks for the help! :)

Infra,I do find it strange since you have a BX chipset (one of the best Intel made)& I`ve a Via chipset that runs great with 5.xx or 6.xx drivers so why is it that 5.xx drivers are fine & 6.xx are not on your system, from what I`ve read the new beta 6.34 are very good yet on your system they don`t work well.

Its really the same thing with all 6.xx drivers.Hangups while trying to play an MPEG movie, or playing a game that uses D3D or OpenGL, or anything that has 3D in it.

My rig is perfect with everything I've tried. Why not the detonator 6.xx? :(

oh well, At least the 5.xx work perfectly.

I'm back again..been trying everything to fix this problem with det3 drivers.Yesterday, I've tried installing the intel chipset drivers for my 440 BX mobo, and guess what? it fixed the problem! I ran 6.31, 6.34, and even 6.47 flawlessly..But this thing didn't last long, as I rebooted a few times and/or shut my pc off, and the problem is back again.

the weird thing is, whenever I install the chipset drivers again, I can use the det3 drivers..a reboot or two and the original prob comes back again.

totally weird.BTW I tried disabling DMA for my HD and CD, and it fixed the problem momentarilly (after a reboot, (guess what?) .. it comes back again...).

Any ideas? seems my pc has a mind of its own.
