I haven't gotten a video card since i last bought my 2 voodoo2's running in SLI, so i've pretty much fallen out of the game. I'm gonna go more middle of the road this time and pick up a GeForce MX 32MB. what brands should i be going for? I've heard that Hercules and Asus are pretty acceptable but I havent' found a 32MB version of the asus card yet.

if you get the hercules get a retail it has 5.5ns sdram(183mhz). oem versions have 7 ns sdram(143 mhz). I would stay away from ddr 64 bit bus mx's.

I would also keep thos voodoo 2's if you have the pci slots to spare. They willl be faster and more problem less with unreal engine games(unreal tournament, deus ex, etc.)

ok, i'm looking at pricewatch right now and the only board i can tell for sure is the retail version of the Hercules Prophet 2 is going for $154. Otherwise, the cheapest price for a prophet 2 - without the tv out, and in a white box is $114. hard to tell if they are 64 bit busses or not, i'm assuming at this price point they're all sdr. do these prices sound about right?

Oh yeah - and how does the ATI Radeon MX stack up against the Prophet 2 in terms of price/performance?

or, if desperate, you can get a radeon ddr now for $150......

I have a cheapo Inno3D. From what I've seen on the boards I can overclock with the best of them. Stable at 205 on the core and 200 on the ram.

ok all hercules cards have a 128 bit bus. The geforce 2 mx ddr boards have 64 bit buses so they actualy a bit slower than a sdr geforce mx.

there is no suck thing as a redeon mx. Mx is used only on sdr geforce 2 boards(it's the name of the chip)

ok - so it looks like i'm going with either the Hercules or the Leadtek... i think i looked one or 2 threads down and some guy said he's having problems with regular 2d output on his trinitron tube? is this documented?

Hold on a second... I just installed my eVga Geforce2 MX and it has 5.5ns Ram and I'm overclocked to 220MHz Core and 210MHZ Memory. Check out the Geforce2 MX Roundup at ChicksHardware.com and look at thier reviews. I got mine for $98 from MixPC.com.

Just food for thought... :)

are you sure that mixpc do have 5.5ns cause evga rep says they only come out 6ns rams mixpc might have hoax ads. and did you add some cooling fan or something to the card? or just normal evga unmodified card.

The retail Guillemot Hercules was the only one with 5.5ns RAM as far as I know. Now there is the
Gainward CARDEXpert GF2MX TwinView GS too! Check out the review

The Herc TwinView is still AWOL or MIA or whatever you wanna call it. I have not seen the Gainward TwinView available anywhere either. I have been waiting on a 5.5ns TV for ages.

5.5ns RAM?

That's not a fluke.

B/c eVGA made the mistake of shipping some Single Head and all of initial shipments of TwinView boards with 7 ns RAM, some of the newer shipments to replace the 7ns ones are equipped w/5.5 ns RAM.

Don't know how long it'll last.

Thank eVGA for that.

VisionsUCI - yep, i remember the first video card that had different specs between the oem and retail versions was the matrox millenium 1. settings were probably all based on differing tolerance levels of the parts, but the retail version had a faster ramdac than the oem.

I'm absolutely positive that my eVga has 5.5ns RAM, it says -5.5 on the chips...
The card came with a heatsink and I stuck a 486 fan on it and have had no problems. Deffinately my best video OC yet, even better than my V3 2000 @ 194MHz.
No guarantees that you'll also get the 5.5ns but they do have some!

Sure the 32MB Radeon is better than a 32MB MX for the price but to get TV output means comparing a 64MB DDR Radeon to the GF MX 2 TwinView which is much cheaper. That's my situation. I must have TV Out for MPEG-4 movies!
