This really puzzled me... tell me if you know whats happening:

I bought an Elsa Gladiac [Geforce2 GTS 32mb DDR] and installed it in my computer. Specs follow-

P3 450Mhz
128 Mb Ram (PC100)
Intel 440BX MB (with AGP 2x)
Windows 2000 Professional SP1
30 GB ata66 hdd (2x15 striped RAID)

Here is the thing. I installed the gladiac with the 6.31 drivers from nvidia's site, and saw that I got 60 fps in demo1.dm2 in Quake2. I uninstalled the drivers and installed 5.32 from nvidia's site. I still got 60 fps in demo1.dm2. I was bored, so I uninstalled those drivers too and installed the ones that came with the card (Manual says its based on nvidia's 5.09 reference drivers), and got a whopping 141 fps in demo1.dm2.

(I have directx7 installed all the time, and all timdemos were run at 1152x864 with vsync off)

Anybody have the slightest clue whats happening? Any recommendations as to what drivers I should keep?

Thanks

99% sure that is a Vsync problem. Try upping the refresh rate for your 3d titles and see if you fps raises also.

OpenGL V-Sync is enabled by default on Nvidia Detonator drivers.

Unfortunately the refresh rate is stuck at 60Hz also with the newer drivers in Windows 2000, regardles off what your card/monitor support.

This would be the reason why you are only getting 60fps in Quake 2. Enabling Vsync will get your FPS back up to normal, but you will still be stuck at 60Hz refresh rate.

Do a search on these forums as there have been discussions about this before and you should find a link to a little program which fixes this, (I have forgotten its name).

Obviously the 5.09 drivers set the refresh rate correctly for Win2K.
