ok, my computer was making a few strange sounds, upon inspection i found my GPU fan was stopping every dozen or so revolutions, shortly after it was spinning about 1 r/s, which I have to think isn't going to be enough cooling.
I'd just get a new card, but I'm planning on a new system this summer, and wanted to wait and get a top of the line card at that point...
my quick fix is rubber-banding an old cpu cooling fan (was being used as an case intake fan) on top of the old fan, the fan used to sit on a 466 celeron.
will that fan be sufficient? I'd just buy a new fan, but I'm not sure who would be selling that fan without the video card attached...
another issue is that I've cut the power to the original fan, so it doesn't quasi-spin anymore... but this has to be blocking some airflow... I'd like to remove the fan, it seems to be permanently attached to the heatsink, and the heatsink attached to the chip, I've removed 2 retaining pins, but they didn't seem to help, could they have used some kind of thermal paste that doubles as super glue? needless to say I wasn't all that cavalier about yanking on the heatsink, so maybe it would come off with more force.

anyone have any advice or experience in this area?
Thanks

You can purchase replacement video card hsf's from a variety of online stores including svc.com

To remove your current hsf:

[*]Leave your pc running for ~5 min
[*]turn the pc off
[*]remove the video card from the slot
[*]remove the 2 pushpins that hold the hsf in place, then you should be able to twist the hsf off with ease

Your GeForce2 had a cooling fan? Neither of mine did, so I'm not sure you really need one. As long as you have at least a heatsink.
