Ok, I can get a GeForce DDR for around $100. The cheapest I can find a GeForce 2 GTS is around $150 (with a 2 week wait).

Is the extra $50 really worth the GTS?

Personally, I'd say go with the Geforce 2 as it's faster and will last you longer than the Geforce 1 DDR.

However, one could also look at things and say that the Geforce 2 isn't really 50% faster than the Geforce 1 (50% being how much more you would have to spend to get it..). I suppose it depends how tight money is for you at the minute, but if you can stretch the extra $50 without too much problem, go for the GF2.

Either card you get you won't be disapointed. The GTS will last you longer though. It all depends how often you change you computer, or computer components.

I believe it depends whether you want to keep the card for a long time or not. Personally I would choose the GeForce DDR and save the $50. NV20 and other fully DirectX8 accelerators are just around the corner, and IMO this is one of the worst times ever to buy a fast gaming video card.

DirectX8 together with Xbox will make a dramatic difference in feature utilization of new games. By the end of this year (if everything goes according to M$'s plan), there will be several high-profile high-budget Xbox games out there, which'll also have nearly identical PC conversions. In order to be able to play these games to their fullest, you'll have to buy a new video card. This doesn't only concern those with low-end cards, but also those with GeForce2 Ultras and ATi Radeon 64MB VIVOs.

This shouldn't be considered as a bad thing. First of all, it ensures several high-budget games for the PC platform which otherwise wouldn't have happened at all - Xbox games might not be 100% binary compatible (or are they?), but conversion won't be much more than a recompilation with minor tweaks. Second, it brings all gaming up to a certain technical standard. Those with not enough budget will certainly find it easier to buy a Xbox, and hardcore gamers with big-$$$ gaming rigs will finally get games which fully utilize their hardware.

Get whatever makes you happy. If you can spend $100 on a vid, and NOT think "D@mn, I should've ... I could've" then do it. Hell I sell the damn cards and I'm just running a plain 'ol Annihilator PRO DDR, not even a GTS.

-BUT-

If you want to be satisfied and even a little bit excited about your card, go with a GTS 32MB. In all cases video cards will only get SO low in price, look @ the V3's and such, they're still in the $65-$85 region, and I am doubtfull they will fall in price untill they're pretty much unusable.

$100 is great on the DDR - Prolly the best bang for 100 bones. If you're going to spend $150, I know there is people on here selling the Radeon Engineering Pieces for the $155 mark. That's 64MB Video for $150. That's a good deal no matter what time it is.
