GeForce Ti 500 visual quality trouble.

I have leadtek's winfast gf3 ti 500 vid card and am running win xp. When ever I play opengl games I get tearing (i think thats what it is). Imagine this: Divide your screen into 4 or so parts along the horizontal axis. When I turn in a game (ex wolfenstein or medal of honor), one or more of those sections does not get moved at the same speed of the others. It like a part of the screen is shifted to one side. It doesnt go away when I put vsync on. Anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

Yep, vsync OFF usually causes this problem. The videocard tries to draw images (frames) faster than the monitor's refresh rate allows (e.g. 85 Hz), so incomplete pages end up getting drawn, then replaced by new pages in the middle.

Turn Vsync ON if you can from the control panel (Display Props), or download PowerStrip and use that.

That doesnt help. However there is no "tearing" problem in direct3d apps like aquanox or avp2 regardless of vsync being on or off.

Err, scratch my last post. The problem is evident in D3d, but seemingly not as severe. This problem only occurs when I move the most VERY fast (twitchy almost) Is this normal for any video card? I would really appreciate any help because this is bugging me and I cant get it off my mind. thx

Is this normal for any video card?

Yes. The reason you notice it more now is because your framerate is much higher now. I have Tearing on my Kyro, Geforce2, MX, Geforce 3 Ti 200. All of them experience tearing. Quake3 tears REAL bad, but only on certain levels. In fact 2 of them only.

One thing that helps the problem is to turn 4X FSAA on, this does not fix the problem, but it slows down your framerate a lot, which indirectly helps the issue.

VSync on does NOT fix this issue. I just learned to live with it! Best of luck!

LOL... most people were asking how to turn Vsync OFF so they get higher FPS.. now people ask how to turn it on to get better visuals with lower fps..

Many games have an option for turning Vsync on/off. Look there - simply configuring the display properties may not cut it.

Leave vsync off. Instead, crank up the detail levels to lower your FPS and make sure your refresh rate is set as high as it can go.

FSAA is "Full scene anti aliasing" and reduces the jagged edges on polygons in 3d-games.
You can change that in you vidcard menu.
It will drastically reduce your framrate, but the games will look really nice.

There is no such issue. You guys are the only one experiencing this problem, and turning Vsync ON fixes it. The rest is up to the game manufacturers, because some of them configure Vsync independently (Return to Castle Wolf, for example).

I used over 20 different videocards in my computer experience, and played games on 15 of them or so. I was able to fix any tearing issues. Vsync is the answer.

Perhaps what you are referring to is a different problem? Can you post screenshots?
