GeForce seems a bit hot

I got a new GeForce 256 yesterday. I've had my computer running for about 24hrs and the case seemed a little warm so I opened it up. The PCB right around where the GPU is attached is almost hot enough to burn me.

That can't be good...

and yes, it has a fan.

Not surprising to me. GF256 core is nvidia last year's product manufactured by 0.22um process. It runs at 480MP/s, producing heat comparable to that of a Celeron 500MHz, but only cooled by a microscopic fan good for mosquito. You should get the idea.

Can't tolerate it? Put on a modified 486/586 fan heatsink and no complaints. 😀

"How hot can chips get before they die?"

Long enough until NV35 comes. The heat might burn your finger but the chip isn't made of flesh.

And you still have the warranty.
