Hello,
I am trying to understand Direct X 9.0 and what cards are compatiable to 9.0. I have read articles about the ATI cards and how they are compatiable with Direct X 9.0. My Geforce MX card is Direct X 8.X, but i upgraded to 9.0. What exactly does this mean? I always thought my card could not be upgrade past 8.X. Will my card be able to play future games that command Direct X 9.0? I thinking of upgrading my card and I do not want to exceed 150.00(I would like to spend less then 100,if possible). Can I purchase, say, a Ti4200(maybe a REFURBISHED card) and upgrade to Direct X 9.0? I like to play BF 1942 and it just doesn't cut it on my GEforce card. Any expert advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Even if you upgrade to dx9 you will not get the new dx9 effects if you are running an older dx8 card, such as a ti4200. Many games will require you to install the newer version of direct x, even if your card will not get any new effects from it. As far as a new card, a ti4200 would be a good choice for around $100. I think you could probably get a refurb 128mb version of one of them for around $80. Keep in mind this card will play dx9 games, but you will not get those dx9 effects.

You could run DX9 on a old Voodoo Banshee card, but its not going to use any DX7, 8, or 9 effects. In theory it should fix bugs though. If you can afford to spend 150, then you may want to look at a Radeon 9600 Pro. The Powercolor card is a mere 148, which is a steal.

The 9600 Pro is also fully DX9 compliant, so you will be able to view at the purty DX9 eye candy at more than a slide show.

Is ATI Radeon 9600 work ok with Epox board?
I am thinking to buy the MSI Ti4200 128MB 8X AGP.
Spend little more money, should I get the ATI Radeon 9600 or Pro instead?
I am also wondering about DirectX 8 or 9 on the Ti4200 card.
Is the picture much better on Direct 9?

Yes, the ATI card will work with the Epox board.
The MSU Ti4200 is probably a good card for the money.
I would spend the extra bucks and pick up a 9600 Pro, its 148 bucks retail at Newegg. I am not a big fan of refurbished cards at all.
The Ti4200 is a DX8.1 card. It has absolutely no DX9 features.
Its not really an image quality factor when you discuss DX8 vs DX9. DX9 has a much more robust feature set and demands that hardware be able to
pull of some pretty powerful effects. When a program is written to take full advantage of DX9 hardware, then the images it produces are truly stunning.

Thanks guys.
I may spend little more and get the ATI.
The reason I ask, I heard somone said that ATI card may have problem working with some Nforce2 mother board.
From x8 to x9, I think I should go for x9.
Which is the cheapest DriectX 9 Vcard out there? :)

DX9 isn't necessary yet. Don't buy into the "DX9 support!" propaganda.

Trust me, you don't want the cheapest DX9 card (FX5200). Either buy the Radeon 9600, or a geForce4 Ti series.

Good point. FX5200 is not as good as Ti4200. ATI 9600 is a good buy.
