clean driver installations? it might be remnants of your voodoo drivers messing with direct3d

Kaiser__Sose,first run your processor at default speed, does this improve stability if so ,then you can go back to overclocking in small steps,go into Bios disable all fastwrites & video shadowing(not all boards have fastwrites option in bios),what drivers are you using?

i tried the ones on the install cd.. tried the latest on the nvidia site.and tried the 7.17's.

i don't have any video shawowed or anything on.. there is no option for fastwrites in the bios.

also tried at default speed and still locks up.

What motherboard do you have?btw the Geforce2 MX is a good gaming card for the price,I play loads of games & all are rock stable with it.IF your card is AGP(I presume so)make sure PCI slot1 is empty(next to AGP slot) & check your IRQ`s for conflicts.

ok.. i had vga shadowing on and i disabled it and nbalive 2000 works now (the only game i've tried )...
the performance is slower than my v3 though.. what gives? i guess ea sports games are optimized for the voodoo cards...

how much can i overclock this sucker and what are some good tweaks for this card?
thanx for the help.

You can get tweaks from here ,also coolbits is not bad but only works on drivers up to 6.49 for overclocking you can get it from here under utilities section don`t use both programs together.

overclocking wise the default are 166mhz for memory & 175mhz for core so try 200mhz for both & see if it will do this or more, if not lower the speed down.

Couple of suggestions:

1) What motherboard do you have? If it's VIA chipset based, be sure to install latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers before trying to run that MX. Voodoo3 might've worked properly without 'em since it doesn't use any AGP features, but MX is another story.

2) Downclock your CPU or change AGP clock divider from BIOS. AGP clocked too high could be the source of your problems.

In anycase, MX should be considerably faster than the Voodoo3 unless those titles are natively optimized for Glide API.

Hello-

Actually, I can back up his claims of EA sports games performing poorly with a geforce 2 mx. I have a celeron oc to 800, and recently swapped out my voodoo 3 3000 for a geforce 2 mx card. Performance was worse from the geforce 2--so much so that I kept my voodoo 3 3000 and sold the geforce 2 mx. The games have glide--however, even when I ran them both in D3d, the voodoo 3 was still faster. I'm not sure why--I ordered a radeon, so hopefully that's better. By the way, I was having the same lockup problems as you are--I could play for about 20 to 30 minutes before it would freeze. If the Radeon isn't any better, I'm going to go with a voodoo 5 5500--I know that'll be faster.

p.s. How do you play at 1024x768 resolution with like nhl 2001? You'd have to crank the detail down quite a bit to get it smooth at that resolution.

actually with the v3 i could play nhl2001 with all details on at 1024x786... it was very smooth as well only time it got a bit choppy is when there was a penalty and the Pic in Pic pops up in the corner.

i really don't want to change back to the v3 but i might have to cuz the mx sucks in ea games..

it's a BX mobo so i can't install the via drivers.

Kaiser__Sose,Check you don`t have FSAA on in the Nvidia display panel under D3D,I believe the default is a low setting, but it`s best to have it completely disabled.

Are you running games in 16bit or 32bit colour at 1024X768? Also disable all video shadowing options in BIOS not just the first one.

how do i know what bit 16 or 32 the games are running in?
in easports games there is just the option for resolution not 16 or 32bit.

Some games give you the option ,others do not & only allow 16bit colour, try running your desktop in 16bit colour & try running a game & see if there is any difference, some games set the same the colour (16bit or 32bit)resolution as your desktop.

EA sports games have always been Glide optimized. I don't doubt that the V3 works better. If those games are your thing, you may want to stick with a 3dfx card.
