GeForce MX 4000

I need a card to get me through until the 6600GTs come out in AGP. I'm thinking spend as little as I can to get myself gaming in Madden 05 and save my money for the GT.

Looks like my cheapest option is the Verto GeForce 4 MX 4000. For about $70.

What are you thoughts

It's comparable to a GeForce4 MX440, a.k.a. dog crap. I'd get a used Ti4200 or GeForce3 first.

Avoid that card, it's pretty much a GF2 in disguise and is only a DX 7 card. You will be VERY disappointed in its performance. Like MDE recommended, I would go with a used GF4 Ti graphics card, which perform, much, MUCH, better than that GF4 MX. You can easily find several used GF4 Ti 4200 graphic cards around $40-60 in the For Sale/Trade section of this forum. More power for a lower price. 😉

Where did you find an MX4000 for 70 bucks? I found this Rosewill at Newegg of 34 dollars.

Newegg's prices on MX4000s range from 34 to 57 dollars. Granted there does seem to be some variation in the core/mem frequencies.

Edit - Also seems to be both 64MB and 128MB models. 128MB model was 46 dollars. Still a far cry from 70.

Don't bother getting a gf4 mx 4000 because they are pretty poor. Most are clocked slower than a regular gf4 mx 440 and have 64bit memory which makes their performance even worse:-

xfx geforce mx 4000 review at ultimate hardware

Notice how the gf4 mx 4000 has a hard time beating even the old gf2 mx400! 😀

BTW make sure you all click on one of the links on the right of the review! 😉

Boy, I new they were pretty pathetic, but man that thing is destroyed by the GF4MX440. My old GeForce 2 Ti would probably kill that thing, and worse of all it sells for $50+ !!! I wouldn't pay more than 5 dollars for it and that would only be to get me on the net until I can upgrade in case my current card fails.

slower gf 4 mx440...........which is a rebadged geforce 2 any way.....certainly nothing good.

tho if its not for gameing then i have no qualms with it

If you're gonna spend 70 on a card then another 200 on the GT, might as well go with a vanilla 6800 *now*

I don't have the $270 now. I have about $100 and games I can't play on my Radeon64. The price quoted was at my local computer store. For various reason, I can't purchase from internet vendors (I lack plastic).

Just go to the forums or ebay and find someone who will take money orders.
😀 Newegg takes Cashiers Checks and Money Orders for new products (not for refurbs, which I don't quite follow!)

😕
