Geforce GFX + AMD setup?

Hey all

I have 2 AMD setups at home. Both which use the 780G and the onboard gfx. I want to install discrete gfx in both of them now, so i ordered the HD 4770. But it turns out that its pretty hard to come by. I ordered a week ago, and it seems i'd have to wait another 2 weeks just to get them. I checked out my other options, and it seems that i can get a Geforce 9800GT which offers me around the same performance at the same price.

But are there any compabilty issues one should be aware of when using an Nvidia geforce based gfx in an AMD setup? I have this silly idea in my head that either you go AMD/ATI or you go Intel/Nvidia.

No.

Hehe nice short answer. Ok, so with that in mind, would the wait for HD4770 be worth it (2 weeks +) or would a 9800GT give me the same bang?

The 9800GT is a noticeably weaker card than the 4770. The 4770 is roughly comparable to a 9800GTX+/GTS250. What about a 4850? Around the same performance as the 4770, and often cheaper/easier to come by (in the US at least, that is - I don't know where you're ordering from). You might even be able to find a GTX260 216/1GB 4870 within your budget.

I live in denmark... And the prices are as follows (converted to USD)

4830: 116,10
4770: 117,05
9800 GT: 125,57
4850: 136,17
250 GT: 157,00

These are the cheapest prices in DK for these cards. Im a little bummed to hear that the 9800 GT is significantly worse than the HD4770. I was looking at the chart at Tomshardware.com and they were neck on neck.

Remember that i'm buying 2 x cards... which means a bump in 20$ would actually be 40$ for me.

I wouldn't say it's significantly worse, but it's definitely weaker than a 4770. The 4830 on the other hand is very similar to the 9800GT in terms of performance, and some of the 4830s have a good deal of OCing headroom. Seeing as to how that's cheaper than the 9800GT for you, that might be the best choice if you don't want to wait for the 4770. In terms of pricing, the 4770's definitely the best deal of all of these, considering it's as fast as a 4850/250 but as cheap as a 9800GT.

I'm surprised the 4850 is more expensive than the 4770. Over here you can find a 4850 for 75% of the price of a 4770.

The 4830 is also very powerful, and much cheaper. I would not go for a nVidia card if you are looking at the budget segment.

The 4850 actually seems like something that could happen. But i heard horror stories about the noise. Anyone here who is able to elaborate on that?

Depends on which 4850. I've heard that the reference cooler can be loud, but quite a few 4850s these days have non reference coolers. I bought the cheapest 4850 I could find (Palit) when I got mine, and it has a non reference cooler that's not only virtually silent but also keeps the card under 60C loaded. The 4850 doesn't generate much heat; it's just that the reference cooler was rather inefficient (single slot).
