How is this new type of GPU in comparison to the existing GF4s and higher end ATI models?

The GeForce FX 5200 128mb 8x is around $100 from online retailers. That seems like a great price for a 128mb card, but is there a significant performance disparity between the FX and 4 cards?

The 5200 is the replacement part for the GF4 MX series and is DX9 compliant, but still performs considerably worse except in AA and AF resolutions, where both perform unacceptably. The 5600 series is the replacement part for the Ti4200 line, but performs worse in non-AA and AF situations, but considerably better with those features enabled.

Considering a 5200 performs worse than a GF4 MX but costs as much as a GF4 Ti4200, the Ti4200 is the way to go.

DX9 isn't a factor. You won't see any DX9 games for a year or more, and when they are released, you wouldn't want to rely on a 5200 or 5600 to run it.

www.stalker-game.com. it's slated for quarter 4 2003.
It doesn't require DX9 hardware, it uses DX9 shaders where applicable, much like Doom 3. If DX9 (PS/VS 2.0) shader ops run slower it'll revert to previous shader versions (PS 1.1/1.4). Plus, it's a PC game, which means estimated release dates don't mean a whole lot. ;)

I think the FX5200's main competition is the Radeon 9000 and 9200. Both are supposed to have roughly the same performance, supposed to be affordable and in the same price range, and both don't have fans over the heatsink, and offer good performance for games that came out last year and older.

The bottom line is, the 5200 will replace the generally agreed upon as crappy GF4MX series. In a few months, expect to see 5200 for around $75.

Note: the 5200 Ultra and 9000/9000 Pro have fans over the heatsink. Most people here don't care, but some people (such as myself who aren't heavy gamers) do care about computer fan noise.
