Nvidia crushed 3DFX back in the day because they developed the technology to do efficiently what 3DFX had to do by brute force. 3DFX had no choice but to have 6 or 8 chips plus separate memory for each to compete with Nvidia's single chip products. Similarly, today we see that Nvidia absolutely needed to wait for the .13 micron process to be feasible to able to clock their GPU so high. It is good that we have the ability to clock a GPU so high, but they needed to do something so extreme with that extreme cooling setup just to get it compete with a 325MHz Radeon R300 GPU. ATI, will very soon release .13 micron versions of the R300 and maybe even incorporate improvements via the R350 very soon. Can you imagine what a 500MHz R350 could do? ATI could also use much faster memory chips to get some really serious memory bandwidth.

At the end of the day you have to look at how much money ATI is making out these really efficient R300 based products, while Nvidia can't possibly be making much (if anything) by selling the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra at $399 or the GeForce FX 5800 at $299. I'm saying that Nvidia is out of the game, but I think this generation and the next one (which some estimates say will be here in 2 months) belong to ATI.

Since I pretty much got us kinda off topic with my rant I done, I will try to tie in now. Come to think about it, its kind of like this guys story.

Nvidia CLAIMS they will have the big gun, fastest card, "1500 HP 383 Stroker". When in fact, when it gets right down to it at the time....No way. Granted Nvidia has a better chance of proving me wrong.

Just like video cards, when someone claims to have the big bad toy, we all want proof. When no proof arrives, then we pretty much assume it was a bunch of BS. Nvidias card being big dog (as of now), BS. 1500HP 383 naturally aspirated/no power adders...BS.

Is Nvidia out of the game....Hell No. They will return to compete. But for right now, ATi is the king. Which is a good thing. Its good to be king!

You guys are acting like nVidia's new card is slow or something. You haven't even seen it with retail drivers yet, and it keeps up with the 9700 just fine. And you assume the R350 is going to be faster. Why? Seen any benchmarks? As I recall, the FX is supposed to be 30% faster than the R9700 when it is released. If you think nVidia was incorrect about their speed claims, why do you assume ATI is correct with theirs?

I think nVidia messed up by making us wait for a .13 micron card to be ready, but they are still very much at the top of their game. All I see around here are people rushing to conclusions on a card yet to be released. If I were nVidia, I probably wouldn't have even let the card go out for testing until it was ready to ship.

Ketchup I think the biggest problem people see is that it isnt AS big of an impact now that its debuting. The Radeon 9700 Pro was HUGE at the time. The Geforce FX is a one up more or less. Secondly, they were delayed all this time...you would think with all this extra time on their hands they would have the drivers up to snuff now for the reviews or at least have a stronger showing. Isn't the GeForce FX debuting sometime very soon? If they havent gotten the drivers figured out yet by now, I dont think we're going to see DRASTIC improvements in a months time (well, whenever it debuts). People are getting sick of the rehash since the GeForce 3 days. GeForce 3, GeForce 3 Ti, GeForce 4, etc. They want a product to destroy the competition again. This time, they missed the boat and let ATi sneak in. If the tables had turned and GeForce FX was out before the Radeon 9700 we would all be here b#$ching about how ATi couldnt produce a knockout winner.

One other thing....what is up with the price tag on the GeForce FX? Ive seen comments on it being priced at 499? I hope not. If you cant destroy the competition with your product Id at least think you would price it competively!!!

Comments on the R350. This is going to be another one up situation again. Nothing drastic, just an improvement to beat the GeForce FX. As far as why I think the R350 will outperform the GeForce FX is simple. Based on the Radeon 9700 Pro technology, add in faster memory speed and core speed, step up to DDR-II, I think it should have no problem beating the GeForce FX. BUT, I'd like some PROOF of this like everyone else. Until then, this is completely speculation.

Now, Nvidia has a superb driver team....come debut time they could turn the tables and destroy the 9700 Pro. I would love to see this. Why? Drive down the price of the Radeon 9700 Pro (I already have one, would like another). Then again, they may flop and not beat squat.

Im not loyal to any company. I want the best product for my dollar, no matter who offers this. GeForce, ATi, Matrox, whoever. I think alot of people are in the same boat as me.

" Ketchup I think the biggest problem people see is that it isnt AS big of an impact now that its debuting. The Radeon 9700 Pro was HUGE at the time."

What you guys are forgetting is how big of a step up from the Ti4600 the GF Fx is, and that the 4600 was already way above anything ATI had till the 9700. nVidia didn't really release a chip that's not an upgrade, it's just not much of an upgrade for those of us with 9700s. For everyone else, it's a huge step up.
