Trying to figure out which one I should buy. I'm going for sheer speed here. Which one will play Doom 3 faster assuming the processor isnt the bottleneck?

Definately a 9700 Pro! There's no thinking twice! Performance is way better on the 9700 pro.

9700pro.
The 256mb frame buffer isnt needed by any game thats out, or is coming out in the forseeable future. Doom3 only uses 80mb on textures. Plus the 9700 is faster anyway.

These two VGAs aren't comparable, 9700Pro of course.
The 5800/Ultra are nVidia's comparables to the 9700 series for sale right now.

They are all much of a muchness really. The only differences that seperate them are things like software/hardware bundle, and cooling.
I have a Sapphire 9700pro, and its great.
Sapphire also make a 9700pro ultimate edition, which is 100% silent, it use`s a Zalman ZM-HP80A Heatpipe Cooler.

No question, the 9700. I assume you meant 9700 rather than 9700P, as the 9700 (~$215) is much closer in price to a 5600 (~$180) than a 9700P (~$265)--in the U.S., that is.

All 9700/P's should be the same speed, so the main differences you should concern yourself with are warranty length and terms (location of RMA center, who pays shipping, turnaround time, tech support hours). Also, if you want to run dual CRT's, make sure a DVI-DB15 adapter is included. If you're going for a 9700P, it might be worth just buying a retail ATi version at a local store for $300 + tax rather than buying an AIB one online--returns and RMAs should be easier (at least for the first 2-4 weeks), and ATi probably has a longer warranty than most AIB's (3 years). I think a 9700 (non-Pro) is an overall better deal, though.

THis shouldn't even be a debate. The 9700 let alone 9700 pro will scorch a 5600. Not even close.

What I wanna know is who voted for the 5600? Must be some jokesters here in the A/T forums :)

The extra 128MB on the 5600 is there for marketing purposes. It works too. Good thing most of us here know better than that.

Well, I went to Best Buy to exchange my 5200 for a 9700 pro but they were out of stock so I broke down and got a 9800 pro but the assholes wouldn't let me exchange my 5200 because I dont have the receipt! First of all, the money is staying in their store no matter what. They are profiting no matter what. I was about to hand them another $300 on top of what I paid for the 5200...You'd think common logic would tell you to take the 5200 and keep your money but nooooooooooooooooo:disgust:

In this case, common logic does not apply. Best Buy is very strict about there policy on returns, and the person behind the counter was just doing their job. If you had asked to talk to a manager, you might have been able to return it, but even that would be iffy. Just sell your 5200 on eBay.

I just went to Best Buy today when they were locking the doors and they exchanged it without any hassles at all. Now I have a 9800 pro 128 >=)
