Sounds like a software problem to me:-

1.Which video card driver are you using?
2.Have you also tried the Farcry patch?

Run drivercleaner then reinstall the latest NV drivers and also your mobo/chipset drivers. Also do what the above advice said and install the patch.

Drivercleaner is not a program you install. Sometimes, using Windows "Add/Remove Programs" will not remove all of a previous version of nVidia's drivers. Drivercleaner is a utility that completely removes the remaining elements that may cause your problems. Detonator Destroyer is another that is supposed to do the same thing. I'm not sure, but I believe these programs are best run in "Safe Mode."

What Windows version are you running? There are several versions of these utilities. The one you use must support your version of Windows. Check the readme files.

Driver Cleaner ver. 3.2

Detonator Destroyer ver. 1.2

Hope that helps. :)

Patch the game, make sure directx is up to date, if you have to update directx, reinstall your graphics and sound drivers.

you never told us what version of windows you are running... so our advice is just shot in the dark guesses.

What settings are you trying to use in game? anything above 1024x768 will cause severe video lag on far cry, on top of that you cannot use maximum detail settings with an FX5500, (i speak from experience, currently using an FX5600)

Did you upgrade from a different graphics card?

Have you changed anything else in the system?

How did the system run before the upgrade?

Are you trying to use Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic filtering?

Did the problems start happening right when you put in the new video card, or was it something that happened after a little use? If it happened upon first using it, the card just possibly may be defective. If it happened after some initial usage, then perhaps the card overheated...although I don't think an FX 5500 can overheat...I'm not sure. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

With a FX 5500 256MB (?!), I'd turn all the details to Lowest except maybe texture quality. That's a really slow video card.
