Looking to upgrade my V770 Ultra to something new for my Cel 450a/440BX system. After serious "digging" around I've narrowed by choices down to these, trying to stay below $150:

CL Geforce DDR @ $135
CL Geforce2 MX @ $90
eVGA MX @ $105 (5.5ns memory - overclock!!!)
Voodoo5 5500 @ $145

I initially wanted the CL MX with DDR memory. I know all about the 64bit memory bus, but had read that performance should be about the same as other MXs. But the only 3 reviews I've read showed it to be somewhat slower than others, even when overclocked. Is it possible that CL is holding back sending out these cards to the major hardware websites (anandtech, nvnews, etc) for reviews because they're afraid negative findings will make a serious dent in their sales? Isn't it odd that retail stores have them, but internet sites are rare, even though it's been out over a month?

The eVGA is what I'm leaning toward. The price and 5.5ns memory are really attractive, and is readily available.

I found the Creative Labs Pro with DDR memory for $135. It seems performance would be better, especially in higher resolutions than the MX. This may be a better route for me, since I plan on a CPU upgrade down the road.

And then, low and behold, the V5 now enters the picture with the recent massive drop in price. But, it doesn't seem to work well with lower-end CPUs like mine. Please, don't flame me to bad. I know about 3dfx's problems and the limitations of the V5. But many people have been really happy with this card --- extremely stable drivers, better image quality than G2 GTS (say whatever you want about NVidia, but the vast majority say this is true!), Glide support, etc. I know that performance is down compared with G2 GTS, but don't know how it'd work on my lowly 450a.

I've ruled out Radeon DDR @ $150 because of ATI's poor history of updated driver support. OpenGL is very good, but D3D is lacking.

Main games I play are:

#1 - Flight sims
#2 - First person shooters
#3 - Sports games

If I would use FSAA, it would be at low-res in my flight sims --- I know about the impact it has at high-res!

Any thoughts/ideas/recommendations will be apprciated!

Voodoo 5 5500 AGP all the way.

O, I forgot to tell you guys. I've bought Voodoo 5 5500 AGP today and all I can say about this card is "Voodoo 5 5500 is MARVELLOUS!"

I didn't decide to buy a Radeon, because I dont't like ATI.

My advice is, that you cant't go wrong with Voodoo 5!

I play all games in 1024×768 in 22-bit colour with 2× FSAA and the picture is fantastic!

Games, which I have tested on Voodoo 5 5500 are:
Quake 3 ARENA
Unreal Tournament
Rune
NFS5 Porsche Unleashed
NFS4 High stakes
Deus Ex
Unreal
Soldier of Fortune

Rune is absolutely beautiful in Glide mode with 2× FSAA enabled. It is smooth even with 4× FSAA enabled in 1024×768!

Buy this card and you won't be sorry!

My Geforce SDR is laying in a corner :))

there's really no question at all which to get.

the CL MX is slower than the rest because

1) 64-bit DDr memory will ALWAYS be slower than equally clocked 128-bit SDR memory

2) the CL card has slower rated memory in addition to that

The DDr is a mighty nice card. But for an extra $15 or so, you can get a 5500, which will blow it out of the water even in the DDR's strongpoints/5500's weakpoints

The biggest telling factor is what you listed as your first choice of games:

flight sims.

the 5500 is all over that like a bee on honey.

get the 5500, you'll be glad you did.

By the way, what do you mean by "I know about 3dfx's problems and the limitations of the V5"?

Well, it seems that 3dfx is now in "reorganization". They're going back to just producing chipsets again, instead of making boards. My self, I think this will be very good for everybody concerned. But until they've fully reverted back to chipset maker, there "may" be some problems with the company.

Even though the V5 has 64mb memory, each VSA-100 uses individual 32mb modules --- basically what we have is an SLI configuration on one board. So you have 2 32mb boards working together.

Speed wise, it's slower than G2 GTS and Radeon. Not much, but it's there. Of course, visual quality is better. So that's a good trade off.

I've owned (and still do!) 3dfx products; Diamond Monster 3D and Diamond Monster Fusion. Those two boards never gave me any kind of problems in games, unlike my V770 Ultra in some games.

My main concern is the use of a V5 in my humble 450a --- I've read reviews where there is a substantial penalty using the V5 on low platforms.

the penalty will be minor, considering the type of games you play most. The 5500's 4xFSAA will be almost "for free" in the flight sims.

BTW, they are OUTSOURCING the board production. They are still going to be releasing "3dfx" boards, but they won't be involved with the "physical production" of it anymore.
