how do these two compare?

I'm looking at getting my daughter a laptop to use and she does some light gaming (minecraft, Sims, Garry's Mod and other non-GPU intensive games like Undertale etc)

She has a desktop now with an AMD 7600 and the R7 IGP suits her decent enough but if we switched to a laptop, I want to make sure the GeForce 940M will suffice as well.

Thanks in advance

On the cpu side, an i5-6200u will roughly match a desktop A8-7600. On the gpu side a 940m should be 10-30% faster than A8-7600 IGP. There are many notebooks with this combination of i5+940m to choose from in the $600 range, with sale pricing dipping down under $480, which is a very good deal.

That's exactly what I'm looking at. NE has a good deal on one today, so it got my interest.
Basically, you're saying, not only will it run it, but it will run it better.

Thanks!

With two caveats.

1) That the notebook doesnt throttle due to temperature.
2) That the notebook HDD is replaced by an SSD. Notebooks are a terrible experience without a SSD, especially when comparing to a desktop which usually have slightly faster HDDs.

Yeah, its a 1TB 5400rpm HDD.

HOWEVER, she's currently using an old, POS 160GB SATA that probably isn't much faster at all. I think the 5400rpm might be an upgrade!

have a 930M in my lappy. Pretty decent for 720p gaming (even got forza apex to run on that!). I guess 940m is even better, since its clocked higher.

Be careful, there is a GM108 GeForce 940M with only 64bit DDR-3 memory. This one will be severely slower than the A8-7600 with dual channel 2133MHz DDR-3.

Also, GM107 based GeForce 940M could be 20-30% faster than R7 on the A8-7600 but it also has a higher TDP of 75W.

Research exactly what GeForce 940m the Laptop has before you buy.

According to NoteBookCheck, the "non surface book" 940M is a 64-bit DDR3 card. while the surface book's version of the 940M has a 64Bit GDDR5 memory.

This laptop clearly states DDR3 -- it doesn't look that much slower on NoteBookCheck though...

The 940m will not use anything close to 75W. That is more than the desktop 750 Ti.
