geforce 9 series or 8

so my 7800 gt is dying on me and i think it's time for a new vid card. I was thinking about a 9600 gt i believe is the name and my friend told me i should not get that. he said i should proly try to ge an 8800 gts or the 9800 gtx. i'm not sure which one would be the better way to go. are they both similar in performance or do you guys think i shoudl bite the bullet and get the 9800.

well that all depends on your budget now doesn't it.

9600GT is a good card, if you want to spend under $150.

8800GT is a better card than the 9600GT, but costs from $150-$200

8800GTS is a bit better than the 8800GT but costs $200-$260

9800GTX is a tiny bit faster than the 8800GTS but costs $260-$320

if you get an 8800GTS, make sure you get the G92 512MB derivative and not one with 320MB or 640MB of RAM

Same with the 8800GT, if you get one, with 512MB of RAM instead of 256MB

I agree, I would suggest the 8800GT 512mb

New prices...

9600GT is a good card, if you want to spend under $120.

8800GT is a better card than the 9600GT, but costs from $120-$150

8800GTS is a bit better than the 8800GT but costs $150-$180

9800GTX is a tiny bit faster than the 8800GTS but costs $260-$320

basically, you should try to get 8800GT for around $120, or a 9600GT for around $100

the extra $20 on 8800GT is WELL WORTH it!

better yet, wait until new cards are out, price will probably go down more by then.

The 512MB 8800GTs have dropped into the $150-130 range, just picked one up and I'm extremely pleased with the performance. If you buy one you get a powerful card for a reasonable price and if you want to sell it later to upgrade you aren't out a boatload of cash. That's my opinion 🙂

as extelleron mentioned, wait a couple weeks before buying anything. next gen from nvidia AND amd is out in the next 2 weeks. you should either be able to score a good deal on a 4850 or an even better deal than is now available for 8800gt by doing so.

oh new video card? i was totally no aware of this. but i would thing the next generation cards would be extremely expensive right? hmm this is a lot to think about. so it looks like you guys were leaning towards the 8800 instead of 9800. is this strictly just because of the pricely and slightly difference in performance? maybe i'll wait for the new cards

heh well i was hopeing for around the 300 range area. is there much perfromance difference betweenthe ati and nv? i've always been an nvidia fan. hmmm
