EDIT: OVEN TRICK WORKED!!!!!! (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?p=29940245#post29940245) for pics

so my MSI NX8800GTS 512M OC GeForce 8800GTS is done and only had a 1 year warranty, so im in the market to get a new video card.

Obviously I need to get a gfx card and before I drop the cash I want to ask you guys for help/suggestions. I want to upgrade from an 8800 and also think i wanna go better than a 9800. I dont keep up to regularly with new products (its gets expensive when i see the new shiny toys) but nvidia > ATI, but ATI was closing the gap. Nvidia still the way to go?

Card i was looking at: geforce gts 250
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133266

Hows that card look?
What cards have worked well for you or someone you have known?
Suggestions for a card ~200 dollars?

Im looking for a sturdy card where i can run video settings on high/max without maxing out my credit card.

My rig: (mainly for gaming)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX MOBO
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) [8 total gigs of ddr2 800]

Thanks so much in advance for the help, i really appreciate all suggestions/thoughts.

for 200 or less I'd be looking at a 5770. It will far outpace that gts 250. Its a newer card with support for dx11 to boot I'd recommend an XFX brand they seem to have stellar stupport and a double lifetime warranty

If you're hard pressed to stick with a gts 250 get one made by EVGA the lifetime warranty is well a lifesaver.

Finally depending on how borked the old card is you may be able to get away with baking it in the oven.

your 8800GTS is based on the same GPU as the GTS250. the GTS250 is a G92b (55nm die shrink) clocked to a higher frequency and using a cheaper PCB design which uses less power. sure, it will perform better, but it's not really a superb upgrade over your 8800GTS. the 5770 as mentioned is a good choice for an upgrade, as it is definitely faster than the GTS250, performing roughly around where the GTX 260 performs, and giving you DX11 as well. make sure you get the 1GB model whatever you do. can be had for $149 before rebate if you shop around

Faxon is right! Don't waste your time with the GTS 250. I have a 8800 GT and a 9800 GTX and the difference is not big enough to justify the upgrade. If you want to stick with nvidia I would recommend a GTX 260 core 216. For ATI I will agree with everyone else The 5770 is a great card with DX11 support. Also checkout craigslist if you don't mind a used card. I have found some killer deals so good I now have about 10 video cards ---Overkill

My 8800GT OC recently went sour so I dropped $85 on an HD4850 OC. It has worked out swell, offering a decent upgrade for almost nothing. With the speeds its at I am pretty sure it is 5770 capable for <$100 compared to $150-170 for the HD5770 or GTS250.

If that doesn't work I'd say an EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 (great deal at tigerdirect w/ Bing CB atm). The GTX 460 should be out in July if you want a Fermi, guessing $200-$250.

The GTX260 for ~$160AR/BCB is a pretty good deal at Tigerdirect, but why not go for a better card, the 4890, for just $20 more: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...080&CatId=3669. After Bing Cashback, this card will be under $180, while the GTX260 would require Bing Cashback and a rebate just to get to ~$160.

I honenstly wouldn't do anything less than a 5770, otherwise you'll get no extra performance for your investment. Your card was the same speed as a 4850. Here's the cheapest 5770 currently ($145 AR): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131327

An 8800GTS is a 9800GTX. Once overclocked it becomes a 9800GTX+, which with a new sticker becomes a GT250. It performs nearly identical to a 4850, and neither of those will be a perceptible upgrade.

I wouldn't pay an extra $35 to get a 4890 over a 5770. Sure, it's faster. But not fast enough to matter outside of benchmarks. There are no choices in the midrange. It's the 5770 or 5850, everything else is irrelevant.

Wow....1 year only? You got hosed.

Buy a brand that offers a better warranty and register it right away....

One thought - If you bought the card with an Amex, they extent mfr warranties an extra year...just throwing that out there in case that is how you bought your MSI.

Sorry for the off-topic.
The read from the link you provided was one of the craziest things my serendipitous adventures online have brought me so far. Thank you.
My lower jaw is simply floored by how many vga card failures are due to smt solder joints cracking. If I had known, I might have saved a lot of money on hardware... In fact, I've got a couple dead cards I might just be trying this on.

I hope it works out for the OP.

Yeah, it's nuts. DIdn't know about this myself until a few days ago. Haven't tried it myself, but if I end up with a no warranty dead card someday... well you got nothing to lose.

What is your resolution?

At the higher resolutions, DX11 would be irrelevant on a 5770. Hell, I force DX10 on my 5850 @ 1080p in BF:BC2.

You could probably find a sweet deal on a DX10 card if you are 22" or above.

~$200 budget is in the 5770 and 4890 range.

Is this pretty much the consensus?

Only using a 21'' screen, but interesting suggestion!

Thanks so much guys, well worth the time coming here and posting. As it stands now, im going to bake my video card and hope for results (ill report back)....Other than that, the 5770 looks like the route i will go after more research.

Its an awesome fix probably my favorite too cause people think you're just gonna have some melted pile. I was able to resurrect 2 8800gt's I got off Ebay with the oven trick. Cost me 36 bucks total.
