Geforce 8800gt blank screen when powering up

I have this weird problem with my GeForce 8800GT and viewsonic LCD monitor.
Basically they were working perfectly fine in Windows XP, but then I installed Vista 32 SP1 recently, and I can't use the DVI connector with it. It works fine if I use DVI to VGA, but DVI alone has a problem.
Every time I power on the monitor (and I like to turn it off at night or when I leave for work), it takes a minute or two for it to settle down. It blanks the screen repeatedly, and eventually seems to calm down and stop and works fine after that. but then if I change resolutions, or cycle the monitor power again, it goes back into that stupid loop of blanking the screen over and over again.

I thought this must be a Vista/drivers issue because it never did this in XP. Has anyone experience this?? any suggestions on how to fix this? I just installed the latest Nforce drivers from May 16 of this year. When it first came up in DVI, everything was all blurry until I turned off scaling. I'm running everything at 1650x1080 (native resolution of the lcd)

turn the resolution way down when attached with the adapter... i had a (maybe) similar prob with a new 3870... whatever the card had in it's brain for sync and res wouldn't work with my lcd... plugged into a 21' crt and it lit up, then i set the res to 800x600 60hz... reconnect to the lcd and it came up, then i adjusted the res...

I found a solution to this problem and thought I'd post it here in case anyone comes across this same problem some day in the future and googles this question.

Basically the fix was to create a manual resolution entry in Nvidia's control panel. I noticed that the blanking problem only happened if I chose to use the max resolution possible for my LCD monitor (1680x1050). Since lesser resolutions don't look as good as the native resolution on an LCD, I wasn't content with this work around.
So I thought maybe it has something to do with the timings, so when I created a manual custom resolution that had the same resolution 1680x1050, but in the advanced settings I changed the timings from "auto" to CVT blank, that made the difference. I noticed this one timing went from 146 to 115 or so. Maybe that was the one that was too high for my monitor? Anyway, it works now, and no more blanking!
