Best card for < $75 new is either a 4670 or a gt220. For the price, his friend got a better deal than he would have if he spent $70 on a new card at new egg.

yeah I was sort of kidding around although I certainly wouldnt pay 70 bucks for such an old card. really prices on almost all new cards do stink right now though. a 4670 and gtx260 still go for the same price that I paid for them nearly a year and a half ago.

you have an 8800gt 512mb with a single core Athlon 64? surely you arent going to put even faster card with that cpu are you? you arent even getting but about half of what the 8800gt 512mb can do with that old single core cpu.

No. With prices what they are on the 5850/5870 I was considering squeezing a bit more life out of this 8800GT in my next build. My only concern is that I will then be GPU limited on pretty much any new game.

you are completely cpu limited.

I believe you are correct and I was just misreading what he was saying. I was thinking he meant using a 5800 card with his current pc until doing a new build. still I cringe at the thought of using that 8800gt 512mb with an old single core cpu in his current setup.

It's kind of crazy you can get $70 for an old card like that when cards like the 4850 are being sold between 80-100 and card much slower like the 4350 are going for 73+ new (then again I see them for like 15 AR all the time). There definitely seems to be lots of problems with the pricing in the sub $130 range though I guess it maybe that the 4800s are a great deal now that they are being phased out.

I bought my 8800GTS 320mb over two years ago for $79.99.

I keep it as a backup card. It is great for that.

Yeah it's not a bad deal at all, it's just that the under $100 range is so heavily occupied, and can even get you a 4850. But besides when the low ram holds it back, that's still a 9600GT / GT 240 DDR5 speed category card for $70. Some people are also nice to their friends and buy used cards.

Yeah I was running a 7950GT in my lanbox when I noticed my friend's old 8800GTS 320 just lying around on his desk. It still worked so I offered to take it off his hands for $40 bucks and he was more than happy to let it go. After regreasing the core it runs at a relatively cool 55C load and really boosted the power (and weight) of my lanbox.

When my 4850 finally gets bumped down to lan status, I will shed a tear for this trusty 8800... and find it a home in an HTPC or something...

WTF is the point of those benches being run at low quality? Both cards can handle most of the games with higher settings. This doesn't even tell which version of the 8800GTS: 320, 640, or 512. If you crank up those settings I bet the 320MB will not be able to keep up with its bigger brothers or the 4670.

Exactly; it didn't sound like a particularly great deal until compared to what he would've bought new for the same price.

The only question that matters is "can it game in a pinch?".

The answer is yes. I used one for over a year at 1680x1050 and it ran everything fine even the Crysis demo at mediumish.

It's still a great backup card.
