GeForce 7900 GS - no DVI output?

I am stumped, I have worked with this for two days now. I recently purchased a XFX GeForce 7900 GS graphics card, and when I connected the DVI to my LCD I got no video output whatsoever, no POST output or anything. I tried a different card and got the same thing.

When I attached the DVI to VGA adapter, it started working. I have loaded the most recent drivers and still no luck. My monitor is widescreen and I cannot get to native 1680x1050 resolution in VGA mode, anyone got any ideas?

That's weird if it happens with another card too - would kind of signify that maybe it's some issue with the monitor, although if it works with an adapter that's odd too.

Have you had it working before with a previous card at that resolution and with DVI? Or is the monitor recently purchased too?

nothing has worked. I am certain the monitor is fine, I'm wondering now if it's a motherboard issue, possibly the pins on the PCI E slot are bad or damaged? Could that cause a problem like this?

I've built dozens of systems and I've never been this frustrated. Any help is appreciated.

dvi cable works, I can hook up my powerbook to the monitor over DVI no problem.

The drivers are beta, but shouldn't I see the bios splash screen and post info at boot before the drivers load? it just acts like there's nothing connected.
