GeForce 7800GT GPU now black.

I decided that the NV Silenecer 5 rev. 3 didn't seem like it got enough contact with the GPU, so I decided to take it off and use a different video card cooler. What made me come to this conclusion was seeing how the NV5 RAM white stickers seemed to be leaning off of the RAM chips. And after powering on the systems for a couple of minutes, the back metal plate that secures the NV5 to the video card with the screws seemed hot. So I took it off, and now the GPU looks more black instead of clear almunimum color.

It still has a clear mirror type reflection to it, even though it is now black. Is it normal that it is now black? Or is it something to be concerned about? Remember, this video card was only powered on in a system for like 5 minutes. Are all GPUs with a mirror like covering look silver before they are ever used and as soon as they are powered up, they turn to a balckish color?

My 9500 turned black when the heatsink fell off. It then proceeded to not work anymore.

Mine was still silver when I put a NV Silencer on it after using the stock one for a while.

all the GPU's + CPU's I've ever seen never turned black before. If it still works great I wouldn't worry about it then.

You got a camera so we can see what you mean by black? Mine also has that mirror finish on it, so it appears to be different colors at different angles. On a side note, did you check the temps with the NV5 Silencer? I know mine greatly improved over the stock HSF.

Well, I can't take a picture of mine, but I found one on the web that looks like how mine looks.

Here is how it looked before I ever powered on my system with it: http://next.videogame.it/Immagini/artic...ultranv40_anteprima_windows-linux0.jpg

See that looks silver.

Now here is how it looks after I powered on my system and it froze up after I noticied the heatsink may have been loose.

It looks black as you can see. Exscept that it doesn't have all of the thermal residue over it because I cleaned it off.

I just RMA's the one back to NewEgg, and now, the new one they sent me also has a black GPU. This one has a black GPU right out of the box before I even attempted to put it in and power on my system. Is this one bad too?

What I would like to know is, what color are the GeForce GPUs supposed to be? Is there any particular color they all come in? Or does the color vary and have nothing to do with how they work?

I mean, it just seems odd how it would have all of a sudden turned black after using it for only a few minutes when it was silver before. That is my concern.

Mine both look like the one in the second picture, and they are fine. I couldn't load the first picture, so I still don't know what this silver GPU looks like. Like I said, they will take on a different hue depending on what angle you look at them from because they are reflective.

I think he already mentioned that it changed the color, not a matter of looking at it from different angles.

Are all GPUs with a mirror like covering look silver before they are ever used and as soon as they are powered up, they turn to a balckish color?
They dont change color after powering up. If anything such change could be possible over large periods of time.

What kind of thermal compound did you use? Arctic Silver? (I'm guessing not). Perhaps it's some interaction of the heat sink compound with the aluminum of the GPU, just staining the aluminum. That would be my guess.
