Okay, this is one of those ?welcome to yesterday? posts, but I just perused the specs for the first time of the M$ Xbox 360 and was horrified by what I read. I?m assembling a new system that will be primarily for gaming, and I?m just waiting for the GeForce 7800 GTX to become available in order to put the finishing touches on it. However, after reading about the whopping power that the Xbox 360 will contain, I?m wondering if the 7800 GTX will be relegated to the ashbin of history while still in its infancy.

Admittedly I?m not a console gamer, which explains why I didn?t even know the specs for the Xbox 360 until two months after they were made public, and I?m not a fan of the most popular genres (fighters, racing games, etc.) for those systems. But I do enjoy the occasional port-over (e.g. GTA 3-and above).

Considering the hardware muscle of the new upcoming console systems, will the 7800 GTX even be capable of rendering a low-end, next-gen console port-over?

It's been that way for some time.
New gen consoles show up, they're equal to or more powerful than the PC's of the time, takes 6-12 months, and the high end PC's catch up and surpass, and yet another 6-12 months later the mod end PC's start cathing up.
The original XBox was pretty awesome when I showed up, but it didn't take all that long for PC's to catch up, same thing will happen here.

Definitely true. I dunno, I just wish I had more foresight before I started assembling my system. I would have waited longer. Even with a 64-bit dual-core cpu, the latest video card, etc I feel like I?m wasting my hard-earned money.

I can never seem to catch up. First I waited for 64-bit cpus, then PCI-e mobos, then dual-core 64-bit cpus, now the 7800 GTX?and for what?a system that may be on the cusp of becoming as obsolete as a triplane by years end? I'm always behind the proverbial 8-ball. Sheesh!

Thumb of rule that applies to most commoners is that you always buy 2nd tier components. You don't aim for the top unless you are sure that you have money to spend. Unless you really rich, commonly for CPU, Graphics Card you don't buy the top coponents.

This will clear you out of the catching game; and as PC games lack behind console games when they first come out; second tier components would be more than adquate. The only downside is frequent upgrades of 1-2 years interval is needed.

wait for ageia to release there physics chip if it indeed does happen. yes it will add cost to a pc build but it sounds amazing. first it sounds like it will be an add in card then later could be integrated onto the motherboard.

If you keep waiting for the next great thing to come out, then waiting is what you will always be doing. Thats not a bad thing, you'll save enough money to buy a second home.

Indeed. Build when you want to or can afford to (those times may not always coincide :p). While there are better times to buy than others (i.e., I wouldn't recommend throwing down $400 for a 6800 Ultra on June 21), you have to draw the line at some point - or else you'll never buy. :p

Quite frankly I'm just getting so tired of these posts. All the best games are still PC games. The majority of the games at E3 that caught everyones eye were primarily PC games. Spore (a PC game) got E3 game of the show by every review site I go to. All these tards claiming "PC gaming is dying" is the funniest most rediculous thing I've ever heard because PC gaming has clearly been getting stronger every year. The xbox's best and most popular game is Halo and no offense but that game is a joke compared to all the FPS titles the PC carries including the Quake series, Half life series, Unreal series, Serious Sam, Battlefield Series, Call of Duty Series, Jedi Knight Series, I can go on and on. All the next gen consoles are doing is hyping their hardware which PC's will have before or near their release date making all this hype nothing special at all.

Don't get too worked up about it, people have predicted the death of PC gaming at every console launch in recent history, I think :p

I wrote that I wished I had waited. I never said I actually did. :p My system is done save for the vid card & hdd.

Well, the 7800GTX isn't coming tomorrow, but hopefully by next week. I'm waiting for that...then I guess I'll wait with rosary beads in hand and hope that Uncle Bill's uber machine doesn't make my expensive rig look like too much of poo stain a scant 6 months down the road.

Hmm...I never predicted the demise of PC gaming in my post, did I? I'm a PC gamer first and foremost. I'm just wondering if the 7800 GXT will worth the wait and the $$.

I'm only old enough to remember what the pundits were saying as far back as the early 16bit days, but I remember DISTINCTLY the dire predictions that the introduction of the CD-Rom on the PSX would spell the end of PC gaming.

And don't forget, the PC has a list of backwards compatible titles that even nintendo can't hold a candle to.

Sick and tired of what? I'm new here, and if you deigned to read my post you might have noticed that I didn't denigrate PC gaming in any way, shape, or form. And where did I write that "PC gaming is dying". I know it has been written elsewhere, but not by me. My post wasn't flame-bait, but I'm sorry you read it (if you did read it) that way.

The gist of what I wrote was that after reading the CONFIRMED specs for the Xbox 360, which contrary to what you wrote is not hype but printed fact, I'm concerned that the 7800 GTX may not be capable of rendering the next-gen of high-end games. The 7800GTX is currently being marketed as a "Next-Gen" gaming appliance, so I thought the question was valid.

Don't worry about it. If you want one, and can afford it, then by all means, buy one. :)

Well I apologize then but it sounded to me like you were pointing in that direction. To answer your question, I'm sure you'll be more than fine.

That's okay, and I didn't mean to jump down your throat. I just didn't want any misunderstandings. The only direction I was pointing in was that of someone worried about getting fleeced out of $600.

Maybe the next time I need a new computer or an expensive upgrade I'll just buy a plane ticket to a country where they never heard of Nvidia or Microsoft & where the only cores, dual or otherwise, are found only inside apples.

xbox really wasn't all that powerful when it came out, i mean.. think about it, it only has to render at 320x240.. what a joke

Don't forget that it could also output HDTV resolutions...
