I am trying to figure out which card would be the better update from a Radeon 7850. Any suggestions?

Neither. They are just too close to 7850. The minimum upgrade are used 7950/280/285 or a 380/380X.
I would get at least a 290/390.

Neither? The 270X is the same Pitcairn die as your 7850, so you'd go from 1024 to 1280 shaders and get higher clocks, assuming you don't already OC the 7850. That's not worth spending the money on though. Do you have the 1GB or 2GB 7850?

The 760 would be a bit more of a jump, but even then that's a questionable value.

The 760 is slower than 270X.

Depends when and on what. At launch the 760 had a double digit performance lead on the 270X. It's down in more recent games, but the 760 is still at the least essentially tied in recent games at 1080p. It's slower at 4k, but no one's gaming @ 4k on a 270x or 760.

Oc your 7850.

If your 7850 is the 1GB version, save money to get a R9 380x.

According to latest TPU, 270X is faster than 760 at 1080p

GTX 760 performance at launch June 2013, GTX 760 faster than HD7870 (270X) and faster even than HD7950.

From a 380X review in November 2015, GTX 760 is slower than 270X and tied to 370 (HD7850)

Actually, according to the last review done 10 days ago, they're tied.

Again, just depends on the games tested. I'd say on average over the last few years the 760 is a bit ahead, but that doesn't change the advice to steelodon at all, which is that neither will be a good upgrade even vs a stock 1GB 7850, and neither would provide a noticeable increase in performance at all relative to an OC'd 2GB 7850.

Ahh didnt see that thanks, yes they are tied in this one. And yes I agree that neither is a meaningful upgrade over his 7850.

270x is faster. That review was a 980ti which could result in tighter % numbers for much slower cards.

The cards are not being retested in either of the reviews is my guess since they do not show up on individual charts. They are likely using old values from some of the older games in the list.

Given nvidia vs AMD trend, its probably definitely faster, and has better dx12 support.

if OP doesn't end up with a loss might as well upgrade. Saw a used 7950 going for <$140 online though. Likely you can find a better upgrade

It's not the tighter numbers. Both at 35% is a tie, but even if it was 36/35 that would be a 3% difference and a tie for all intents and purposes. It's the game selection. In the new review they used the following
Anno 2205
AC:S
BF3
BF4
B:AK
COD :BO3
Crysis 3
Fallout 4
GTA V
JC 3
Mad Max
MGS V
RS: Seige
TW3
WoW:WoD

In the Strix they used
AC:U
BF3
BF4
Civ:BE
COD :AW
Crysis 3
FC4
GTA V
Mad Max
MGSV
Ryse
SoM
TW3
Watch Dogs
WoW: WoD

At 1080P the 270X 5-15% faster than the 760 in some of the removed games (esp. COD:AW and FC4), so the game mix can easily make the difference between being 15% slower, 15% faster, or tied.

Either way, without knowing a price on either of them it's a little off topic. It's seems unlikely he can upgrade without a loss, but if he could either would be worth it if for nothing than the new warranty assuming he's looking new.
