A step up/down transformer would be my guess, as its wire wound around what i would assume to be an iron core.

It kind of looks like a "post" speaker for the card. Maybe if the card does not receive enough power or other problems, the card will post beep codes. Or hell, this thing just might talk to you, LOL!

 
Looks a little longer than its predecessor, no? HSF looks all right. Just as long as it's silent.

Im not criticizing but just trying to make do in what info we got lol.

Compared to an ATI solution yes, but for an ATX case , no. And my fan ATI wines.


Edit: Whoops, thought you meant the HSF solution.

Yeah, I did remember hearing something about the card being larger along time ago. It might of not been from a reliable source either.
 
nVidia cards have had a large footprint for quite some time. Even the Ti500 and the Ti4600 were much longer than my 9700 Pro.
