Geforce 6600GT vs. 6800NU?

Howdy,

I've spent all night trying to decide which way to go in deciding between the 6600GT and the 6800NU and I'm not really making much progress. I've so far been unable to find any good head-to-head matchups and I'm not sure how valid comparing separate reviews really is.

So, Does anyone here have experience with these 2 cards? Heck, I'll settle for theories/conjecture/pure feelings on it at this point.... I tend to get impulsive when I get close to buying something and I'm itching to get a new card in my system 🙂

Thanks for any help!

agreed; even if you can't unlock the extra 4 pipes and vertex unit, the 6800's 256bit memory bus overpowers the 6600's mhz advantage.

Thanks for the reply and the links. Wow....very helpful. Seems like the 6800NU really leaves the 6600 behind when you turn on AA. I think I'm going to go ahead and shell out the extra cash for a nice BFG6800OC model tomorrow 🙂

Hope the Vid. Proc. thing works out too.... That's my wife's interest and will help smooth over the sticker shock!

Thanks again

The 6600GT is even with 6800 in the Doom3 tests. For the money I'd say the 6600GT is the better buy and I'd get one if I could find one in AGP.

I'm stuck deciding between the two. I would rather have the 6800NU for gaming but the video processor isnt functional, yet at least the 6600GT has the working video processor but only 128 bit memory bus and only 8 pixel pipes.

So can someone help me decide what to choose?? Either way I am buying the card from BFG Tech.

if you are going AGP get the 6800NU and hope rivatuner does it's magic.

if you are getting an NF4 SLI mobo then definitely go for a 6600GT PCI-E (you can SLI them for < $370)

it's still sort of a tough call if you are only talking agp ... I personally would have issues picking a vidcard with 350/800ddr vs one with 600/1200ddr3 (even @ 8 pipe/128bit) ... especially with a fast cpu

You've got to be kidding.

When they turn on 4XAA, it's 30-40% slower?!

67/86, 46/61, 26/42? In the benchmarks you posted?

6800s cost $250-$280 now, the 6600GTs I've seen are $220-$240.. Personally I'd pay $30-$40 more to use AA?

The 6600GTs will be a good value when dealers stop selling them above nVidia's MSRP, and may have the edge for video encode/decode.

While I respect your opinion RacerX, your numbers are off (it's 350/700 vs 500/1000) and the numbers are misleading.

The 6800 NU has a fillrate of 3900MP/s vs the 6600GT's 4000MP/s. A 2.6% 6600GT advantage you'd never notice.

The 6800NU has a memory bandwidth of 21MB/s vs the 6600GT's 15MB/s, a 40% 6800 advantage you'd notice at a LOT of settings.

The 6800 also has a slight advantage at vertex processing. (406MV/s>375MV/s)

So the only advantage the 6600GT is it's 4000 vs 3900MP/s fillrate edge, which is never going to be noticed.

6600GT's are $185 shipped @ the egg

most reports I have seen are 600/1200 and a lot or 6800NU's are not going past 800 on memory.

I am talking PCI-E so it's a moot point. I think a 6600gt w/ SLI potential is an easy choice for anyone planning on going NF4 or w/ a prescott board.

You're right that for now 6600GTs are the value choice PCIE.

Check out my thread of HL2 benches for some 6800NU power if you get one that unlocks, even at stock speeds!
🙂

like i keep asking, what should i do? in the uk, the 6600gt is like ~$300 and the 6800nu is ~$400

i kind of want to get the 6600gt, but i do like AA so i dunno...

If you like AA then the obvious choice should be the 6800NU, if you're not so interested in AA at higher res then get the 6600GT 😉

i mean price wise...
i mean... my argument on one hand is that i like aa so get the 6800
on the other hand, i don't NEED aa, and would be happy with aa in games now, but living without in the future.

I don't think the 6800 is worth 30% more at stock speeds, but if you can unlock the extra quad and crank the memory up to 800+MHz, then you'll see a big difference above a 6600GT. But, at stock and at those prices, I'd say 6600GT.

There are plenty of benchmarks around to help you decide, tho: Anandtech, XbitLabs, TechReport, etc., etc., etc.

i know, but a third seem to show negligible difference, a third show negligible difference, then quite big difference with AA, and a third show big difference whatever...

So, would you all agree to get the 6800nu at compusa for $200 on Friday, if available? Is PNY a reliable company? I have heard a few complaints about them, but the $200 price for a $300 card, even though its a mail-in, seems to make it worth it. Any opinions?

I picked up my PNY 6800 at CompUSA today, so I can return/rebuy on Friday.

I agree it may not be the powerhouse its siblings are, but for $199 I can't complain.

My only concern is if it's worth the $200 to replace my Radeon 9700 Pro in terms of Performance increase.

The 6800NU is worth $300, it's a steal at $200..

Of course, you have to actually receive the rebate. If you get dicked over on the rebate then it's a bad deal if the PNY brand is bottom of the barrell, which is my impression.
