GeForce 6600GT ramsink required?

The stock cooler on my cheap Legend 6600GT was not effective enough. The stock cooler had a small high RPM fan and covered the HSI chip, the core, and all of the ram chips. I used to get around 60c idle and 65-70c after gaming. So I went and bought a Zalman VF700-Cu cooler.

The Zalman does come with small ramsinks that you can stick to the chips. The problem is the card is designed in such a way that to mount the Zalman I had to leave the ram chips exposed as the ramsinks kept interfering with the main HSF.

Now my temps never go above 55c and the fan is quiet as well. But without ramsinks!

My question is...do the ram chips on these cards get hot? Would it be ok to leave the chips exposed or shoud I just glue a very thin homemade sink on these? (thin aluminium strip I guess)

MO...it helps a little to get ramsinks. GDDR3 runs quite cool.

Ah...thank you JBDan and Kensai. I will just give the card a big torture test by replaying Doom3. :D

I had the same issue with another computer I have...

I emailed Zalman!!
They responded that the ram heats sinks are not needed!

Good Luck!!
