Geforce 6600 GT versus BFG Geforce 6800 OC

I've got a Barton XP 2600 with 512 megs of PC 2700. I'm trying to decide if I should buy a Geforce 6600 GT now, or wait for the BFG 6800 OC, which is out of stock at the site I want to order it from ...

Judging from the Anandtech article below, there isn't that much difference in frame rates between the two cards ...

http://www.anandtech.com/video...c.aspx?i=2278&p=13

So - would it be worth it for me to wait who knows how long to get the 6800 OC, or should I just get the 6600 GT now? The 6800 isn't that much more than the 6600, and it comes with Far Cry, which I haven't played, but on the other hand I've read posts from people who say the BFG 6800 is hella loud, which I think would bug me.

Any thoughts/advice?

I personally would go with the 6800 card, the potential is there to make the card even faster than it already is over the 6600GT...

I am trying to talk a buddy into getting the 6800 right now over the 6600GT, hopefully he does it! :p

Thanks for responding, CraigRT! I know about overclocking the already overclocked 6600GT, enabling the extra pipelines, etc, but do you think that actually give you extra performance when running Doom III, Half Life 2, etc at 1026x728 or slightly above?

From the anandtech article I linked to, it doesn't particularly look like it ...

I agree that for the current games it doesnt make much difference at those resolutions.

but the little price difference justified it for me. after selling the games and rebates mine comes out to $180.. and im sure it will be a better choice in a long run..

IMO 6600gt is junk. 128bit memory!? pfft... another user of this board compared the two, and got about 9k 3dmark 03's with the 6800oc, and 6000 odd with 6600gt...

But does that gap between the two cards actually make a difference in-game, Azzy64? I haven't seen any comparisons between the two where the 6800 OC had a big advantage in frame rates ... The 6800 GT or Ultra, definitely, but not the 6800 OC. I'm not saying there isn't a difference - I've just never seen it written up anywhere.

I read that thread and posted in it already. The person who started it said his games ran more "smoothly" with the 6600 GT than the 6800 ... which would seem to indicate better frame rates with the 6600 GT, but I know you can't tell anything from just one person's experience ... hence my request for more people to weigh in.

I would expect the 6800 gaining a huge lead when you play older games and bump up resolution, FSAA and the like. You really need the memory bandwith in that case.

Higher clocked cards with lower memory bandwidth are usually only competetive as long as it is "MUST PLAY NEW GAME XXX NOW NOW NOW - and have few money".
