Geforce 6600 from Radeon 9700?

Hello,

I am still using a Radeon 9700 video card. The rest of my system is an Athlon 64 2000, 768 RAM.

Would it be a noticeable upgrade to go from my Radeon 9700 to a Geforce 6600 256MB AGP card? Or maybe a Radeon X700 256MB AGP card?

I only want to spend around $100, and the 6600 and X700 seem to be what is currently going for around that price.

Would I see a double or triple performance increase with this kind of upgrade?

Thank you for any info!

Ok first of all there is no A64 2000+, or are you saying 2000mhz?

Next, the 6600 is probably on par with the 9700NP if not a little slower. If you were to OC both to max, the 6600 would probably be slightly faster, but not nearly enough to warrant an upgrade. I wouldn't go anything but 6800GT/X800XL or higher with the 9(7/8)00 series.

I agree, they should be pretty comparable in peformance - the 6600 would likely have a small advantage in AA/AF modes, but you aren't likely to be using those on newer games. Not worth the switch. And I presume you meant an Athlon XP 2000+? Probably best to stick with what you have, until you can afford a full system upgrade.

That would actually be a downgrade, unless you OC the 6600. And that 256mb mem would be useless to a card in it's class. In fact, if you can afford it, get a whole new system - you need 1 GB of ram for modern games, and AGP cards will be joining the dinosaurs soon on the extinction list. If you're short on cash, keep the 9700, it's still a decent card. If you have the cash, upgrade to a pci-e/A64 platform and you'll have a much wider choice of cards available.

If you really want to upgrade the card, then you'll need something like a 6800gt or a x800xl, but like I said the supply of AGP cards is running short, and so far there are no new cards planned for AGP.

Yeah, coming from a 9700pro myself to a 6600 vanilla stopgap, I'd say the cards are about on par with each other. The net difference for the switch, for me, was $0, so it gave me an excuse to upgrade to PCI-e. In your case, I wouldn't do it. You won't see any benefit, and 256MB of memory is useless for that card.

I see thank you all for the responses.

So basically I need to go to PCI-e in order to get newer video cards in the future.

Barely any performance difference. A 6600GT would net you about 50% more frames (a nice improvement), while a 6800GT or X800XL would be a very nice upgrade 🙂 .

I agree. If youre on a budget, get a 6600GT or 6800NU. They go for about $125-$140.

Get a used 6800 or GT on the forums, that would be your 1st significant upgrade.

A lot of people are moving to 7800s so youll see quite a few for sale at decent prices.

Minimal upgrade, no where near 2x

I would agree, but is nice for an updated hardware that can handle games that are out today.

The R9700 is DX9. Fair enough the shader models have been updated but there aren't enough games out there yet that require these or make enough use of them to make a massive difference to game play.

Don't get me wrong, the more stuff they get on the silicon the better but with the exception of the odd one or two games, the vast majority of even DX9 titles will still look pretty identical to a newer card.

Yes, this is very true. Ive bought 4 off forums recently(not all just for me). BFG 6800GT PCIE card for $250 shipped and another BFG 6800GT (AGP) card for $230 shipped for my little brother. Also bought 2 BFG 6800 ultras for $270 each shipped.

You can find some nice deals on 6800GTs now. Just look around a bit. 😛

The 9600xt is way slower, I hope you're not thinking about downgrading to a 9600xt. Unless you ment the 9800xt, which would be somewhat faster, but not enough to justify the price if you already have a 9700.
