Hi,

I am about to pick up a low end card for my machine (mostly for desktop usage). I am thinking of the Geforce 6200. I have (some-wierd-brand) Geforce 6200 128MB for around INR 2550 (around 55 USD) and I have XFX Geforce 6200 512MB for around INR 3100 (around 70 USD). I don't have much issue in spending the extra to get the XFX with 512MB Ram, but I was wondering is there any point? I mean for a low end card, would it make much difference?

The only games I would be playing a lot would be Quake III Arena, UT2004 and Counterstrike : Condition Zero. Otherwise, most of my usage would be desktop applications (on Linux) and media playback.

So what difference would an extra 384MB of memory make? I would prolly be taking it anyway, but just wanted to know if there was any advantage to having so much video memory.

Regards,

very probably not.

512mb of memory really only starts to make a noticable difference when the resolutions and AA/AF start getting cranked up. this card wouldnt be able to run games at those setting to begin with, so the 512mb is pretty useless.

also its likely that the 512mb card has slower memory than the 128 card. so your performance would suffer even more.

have you thought about the 7300GT? thats pretty much the 6200's replacement and its honestly not a bad little card. 128bit memory bus and a decent core, should make playing those games a little more bearable.

Another vote the 7300GT if you can afford a couple dollars extra. FAR faster than the 6200.

For a few dollars more grab the GeForce 7950GT. I have 2 of them in SLI mode and they rock. The 7950GT is quite cheap right now and has a 512MB frame-buffer and you can overclock to 7900GTX speeds.:)

A 7950GT is total overkill, and completely unnecessary.

If you wouldnt mind spending an extra 20-30 bucks, get an evga 7600gt, Its $90 at newegg, has a lifetime warranty, and will play those games much better than any 6- series and way better than a 7300gt. the 7600gt is about 3 steps up in performance for only 1 step up in price

OP that is a deal right there, im not in the US so am not aware of such great prices, the 7600GT here would of been out of range i think.( £100+ i think)

7600GT for $90 is a steal, and its performance puts it somewhere round the 6800Ultra! and that card played UT2004 like a champ, max settings 4xaa 8xaf, i know coz i had one.

7600GT will be worth your time and money for sure.

A few dollars eh? A 7950GT starts at $220 and higher and the cards we're talking about are between $60-$100.

I'd say that's more than a couple of dollars.

And that 7600GT on newegg for $90 is a steal of a deal!
