since they are broken, therefore they are devalued right? so they must be going for way less than expected on ebay.. so i think you should pay me, plus give me your video cards for my athlon xp.

Offer still stands Duvie.. going.... going.....

What I'm offering you here today, is a completely working as advertised Athlon XP, it will do your HD files just fine. And, its working COMPLETELY as advertised.
Now THATS a value!

Now you have the ultimate solution, a dedicated WMV HD processor!

Just send me your Geforce6, $100 and I'll send you this miracle of modern computing.

Oddly, and others don't seem to reproduce my results, by using mp10, det 71.20s and enabling high quality mode, the dropped frames on my Dual Opteron@1.725ghz went from hundreds to less than 20  the load balanced CPU usage went from peaking in the 60's to not exceeding 5x% too, don't ask me what I did or what settings I must have had borked for such a dramatic change since the PVP can't accelerate it either because I'm not at all certain.

Housecat, can you tell me how I can play my WMV HD like Step into Liquid without stuttering and dropping frames? My A64 and Barton XP both drop frames.

Thankls rbV5.... I wouldn't mind as stated if this thread went that direction either!!!

Pfft. Newsflash for Duvie:

This sort of thing has happened before

1. ATI was never able to supply Windows 2000 driver for my MAXX!
Maybe if I start a thread here, they'll apologize and give me money!

2. My rev1 8500 retail was never able to run stable at stock speeds, like hundreds of others I had to downclock to 250/500.
Maybe if I post that I'm starting a class action suit that I'll never start, I'll get those extra 25/50MHz I paid good money for!

3. My rev.1 9700Pro retail had rolling lines scrolling across the desktop, like 1000s of others!
Waah! I paid for a card without wavey lines, I shouldn't have to use the DVI adapter workaround! Waah!

The difference between me and some of you whiners is when I buy rev 1 hardware or software, I'm surprised if everythign does work right. The upside of buying rev. 1 stuff is getting to be the first to try it. The downside is being a paying beta tester.

Gee, that's three times you've told me to get out of the thread Doogie. Funny how I'm not listening at all isn't it?

That THING is the spawn of satan, and unless that greedy malevolent corporation known as Nvidia sends us all a new video card because we are all SOOO important, millions of children around the world will never be able to watch Step Into Liquid without stuttering... and dropping of frames.

I suggest you send all your broken Geforce6 video cards to my house. Forget about the Athlon XP trade up.. the burden should be all mine to take on these malfunctioning cards.
Let me just fix the crux of the problem, remove the Geforce6 from your life so its just a little bit easier to cope.

Take a step back and breathe ya'll.. someone is here to help you. No its not Nvidia, its tha Housecat.. thats right, your savior is here in this apocalyptic time of need.

your either being comedic or your a fanATic

basically, i payed £305 for this 6800GT, primary use? gaming......im pretty sure thats what the rest of you bought yours for too and guess what? we all got great gaming cards, the pleasure this card has brought me more than covers the £305 spent, i can play any game plus eye candy faster than many of my mates can play the game at lowest settings. if anything the card caming with Bragging rights and not a PVP. however the PVP was the feature that made me go for the GT over the X800pro vivo. now as i said before im a big DivX/Xvid user and i would really like to have some help from the PVP in encoding/decoding. as it was being touted as fully programmable i could at least hope i got this help. but it turns out that the PVP on the NV40 is pretty limp wristed...only providing simple DVD features that you need to buy codecs for anyway.

in my opinion Nvidia have been abit cheeky in asking people to pay yet more money for something that doesnt work, but the codec have royalties tied to them so theres no way round paying for them. also i think nvidia made the situation worse by saying "there'll be a fix there'll be a fix dont worry" when in truth the PVP was pretty much FUBAR'D and not going anywhere. even if they just came out and said look were sorry but the PVP on your card is faulty, right from the start i think things would be abit better. its still bust but least they acknowledged it.

at the end of the day though... all this thread is doing is flogging a dead horse. no one has the cash to mount a law suit, and the PVP broken at the hardware level full stop.

PVP is BROKEN.....its NEVER going TO BE FIXED by SOFTWARE. the thread should just end

at the end of the day you all got great gaming cards no? im sure thats what most of you had in mind when you bought it. theres no way everyone here bought this card simply for the PVP.

Pissing and moaning about Anand not championing your cause is fairly pointless too- maybe he doesn't agree with you?

Mostly, again I've got to ask Creig, what does a guy with ancient old Radeon cards care about GF6s to show up in a thread about them?

What concern of it is YOURS to show up in this thread Rollo? You've stated time and time again that the HD WMV acceleration function is of no concern at all to you and that everybody who expresses the opinion that it IS important to them is an idiot. So you have even LESS of a reason for posting here than me.

And what business is it of YOURS what video cards I own or do not own. Maybe I already own a 6800 series and haven't updated my profile. Maybe I'm thinking of purchasing one and looking at all the pros and cons. I didn't know that people were required to own a piece of hardware that they have questions about. Keep your overly large nose out of my business.

So why are YOU coming back into this thread time and time again when you profess no interest in it? One can only assume that it's to continue the flame-baiting and trolling that has earned you a lifelong ban from the SharkyExtreme forums.

I can only hope that someday the Anandtech Mods will finally see the light as well. Then the rest of the AT community can sigh with relief.

Kevin, perhaps you forgot to read Rollo's original post to me. I had a legitimate question about whether or not Nvidia was going to fix the PVP function of future NV40/NV45 cores.

So perhaps you should also be preaching to Rollo about why he's dictating where I can and can't post.

A question that has been answered to the best of our ability 234732992302388 times. DO we work at Nvidia? (Most of us... No) So why would our answer be different than the other million times this was asked. You know as much about this as anyone here does.

Its not bad to courteously ask for modding. The problem with Rollo's posting is that everyone is focusing on the PVP 'features' not working despite Rollo. He's taking the fact that people bring up PVP features dont work as a personal insult, and he seems to believe anyone who brings it up hates Nvidia. Then to try and even things out he post anti-ATi stuff totally unrelated to the thread:

1. ATI was never able to supply Windows 2000 driver for my MAXX!
Maybe if I start a thread here, they'll apologize and give me money!

2. My rev1 8500 retail was never able to run stable at stock speeds, like hundreds of others I had to downclock to 250/500.

Waah! I paid for a card without wavey lines, I shouldn't have to use the DVI adapter workaround! Waah

This is totally unrelated to the thread and his general insulting stance to anyone who is ticked over buying a card that doesnt work as advertised should get him modded IMO.(they have a right to be upset)
Theres no harm in the truth and the blunt truth is that the advertised PVP features in the 6800 line do not work and will never work. Everyone who purchases the card should know this fact, now its not the end of the world and if you're mostly a gamer it wont matter but everyone should know.

hes stil right though.....the PVP is the first fully programmable video processor to be packaged with a GPU as well, this is the first time its been done...i would expect there to be problems, of course engineering is so good these days that somethings do work first time, but i wouldnt expect all things to, especially when new technology is involved. things can and do go wrong everyone makes mistakes surely u can give nvidia the benefit of the doubt.

maybe they just rushed the design out the door so they could release a killer update to their limpwristed FX line, before ATi came along and extended the lead they had.

i still say that 100% of you bought your 6800's initially with gaming in mind, then thought oooo look its got a video processor too. far as im concerned you all got your gaming card (granted some have had and are having problems but the majority arent) .

the PVP is dead...in discussion and on the silicon of our 6800's theres no more that can be said. jus leave it to push up daisy's.

if you really really want the PVP im sure Nvidia will have it fixed for NV50 (that is if its goin to have one) and im willing to bet thered still be plenty of people willing to take a 6800GT of your hands. so sell up and buy nvidias next card....you'll still be out of pocket, but thats life....get on with it

This is not unrelated to the topic. You guys are whining and complaining about Nvidia, and how ATI and others are so much better. He just leveled the playing field out.

Addittionally, the blunt truth, as stated above, has been discussed 83248237923947 different times. Every single time we give the exact same answer. It hasn't changed, nor will it.

Oh? And what guarantee does the public have of that? From reading this (and other) threads, it's more Nvidia's lack of admitting that it's broken that's upsetting people more than the broken hardware itself.

Nvidia's credibility as a company is on the line here. If this is their attitude on the whole situation (ignore it and it'll go away) then why should we believe that the featureset printed on the upcoming NV48/NV50 box will be 100% functional?

I'd agree if Anand would make a sticky thread saying '6800 PVP features dont work' so everyone scanning the forums knows exactly what they're getting when they buy a 6800 card. However thats not going to happen so having a thread with lively discourse on the subject is unfortunately the best thing.

you know....as long as they make great gaming cards i dont care. yes PVP is a nice extra, yes Nvidia were wrong for not admitting earlier....but unless you have a Delorean and a Flux Capacitor you cant change anything.

i think life is just that little bit too short to be wasting your breath whinning about why nvidia never admitted earlier.

its easy to see why they never admitted though, at the time the 6800 was being pimped into next week by reviewers.....why would they rain on their own parade?

whats done is done, you cant change it and your now going to carry on with your life worrying about other more important things like earning money.

I personallly can play DVDs and DIVX files fine but it seems the cpu usage was more then it use to be prior to this card. What is the need to use the NVDVD??? I just use winDVD which I own and evrything seems to play nicely and look very nice on my monitor....Am I missing something???

I thought I saw that nVidia just made it clear that NV40/45 can't support WMV-HD hardware acceleration no matter the circumstances.

I dont know about you all, but I think Rollo is quite on here.

<- another 100% Rollo fanboy

Anybody who defends the 5800 Ultra is cool in my book. Takes a real pair of nads.

But generally, yes.. There is no reason to beat a dead horse, we all know the facts and basic logic tells us that hopefully Nvidia will revise the core to incorporate the PVP. But if they do, does it matter? Are you expecting them to revise, then they will give you a new card, or a tradeup?

You have two chances of that, slim to none. Because they dont make cards, and no way is Evga/Jaton whoever going to take those off your hands when they are merely a middleman. IF this scenario were to occur (NV rise the cores effected), then BFG owners would be most likely to pull off an "exchange" with their lifetime warranty.
But quite obviously, it must not be cost effective to cater to the vast minority who cares about PVP.

I think thats about as much "new" information that can be injected into this thread.. and its not new its just simple logic. All other questions SURELY have been answered before, therefore we have a search feature here at AT.

The fact of the matter is Creig, I actually own a 6800 and have the possibility of using these features, you do not. I paid money out of pocket for a Plextor ConvertX box to get some of the video functionality that was missing from my 6800NU and 6800GT. (notably VIVO) You're here to flame only.

I'm proud of why I was banned from Sharky Extreme- telling people bragging about how many cards they had burned OCing and RMAd exactly what I thought is a badge of honor to me.

If you think what they were doing is honorable, and I should be ashamed of getting banned for calling them scum, I'd be happy to tell you what I think of that?

It's also fairly obvious that at least some of the AT community agree with my position on this issue as well, or do they not count in your "rest of the AT community"?

The difference between me and you Silvertrine is that I don't consider this "anti-ATI stuff" any more than I consider the PVP "anti-nVidia stuff".

I understand that when you buy rev. 1 hardware there are risks involved, and I'd rather see companies get products out the door and into my hands sooner than later. I can deal with a video format not working, using an adaptor, running 10% slower, or not using Win2K if it means I get to play with new tech asap.

I hold no grudge against ATI for the stuff I posted, I've always bought their flagship card of every generation and wioll continue to do so.

Likewise, I've had some disappointments as an early adopter of nVidia, but I won't stop buying all their cards either.

What I posted was related to the thread because it showed, with personal examples, that this kind of stuff happens all the time. You deal with it, move on.

BTW:

Guys, I ran Step Into Liquid on my 6800 last night, with the latest drivers. There was no acceleration of the decode!!! Can you believe it???

Can anybody post some helpful tips as to how I can get SIL to run with less cpu usage on my AGP 6800???

;)
